Hi Kevin, try this first - at a command prompt (Start, Shutdown, Restart in MS-Dos mode) type the following: scanreg /restore and press <enter>. The next screen should show you several different dates to choose from. Pick one from a day or so ago and again press <enter>. This ought to restore your computer to a time when things weren't so chaotic.
Please post back with results.

Idnew
November 5th, 2005, 05:31 AM
Don't do that yet. When you boot in Dos or command prompt only at the c:/ type scanreg/restorePick the newest date when it was working.
Do you have the windows 98 CD to re-install it if the above didn't work?

scanreg/restore will return bad command or file name. Doesn't matter if it has a space or not it will work.
*pulls hair out* Here's a couple of other things to try. Also that first error is you cd rom drive which may not be working to try this, but see
put in your rescue cd and boot again to the prompt ...at the prompt type in the letter of your cd drive then type in example: d: dir and see if it shows you what is on that cd. Windows may be on that.
at c prompt type in scanreg/fix and see what it does
then
back to c prompt. type in dir and see if you see windows setup anywhere
Have you got a boot disk? If not click on the boot disk link in my sig and get one for that OS with cd support.

hi nattiniiny
as long as you have a prompt at C:\>_

try this one as command line
C:\windows\command\scanreg /restore

Always do the restore when a prob first happens, usually saves a lot of headaches. You prolly had a problem before you tried to download.

here is a thought
when you tap F5 or F8 for menu, or get the menue shown after a bad boot, one will oft recommend safe mode. what is most oft best beginning point, but one cannot uninstall a good many things from safe mode
when drivers conflict, safe mode boot might not work for you, but VGA mode could still work.
uninstall should work in that mode.
as a last resort?
an over the top, with cab files found on the hard disk?
C:
cd\
dir base4.cab /s
could be this shows in c:\windows\options\cabs\
the next step (if found there...)
c:\windows\options\cabs\setup /d /im /iq /nd /is /nm /p j /NTLDR
and there has to be a space between P and J
and NTLDR has to be in capitals
jtdoom
November 11th, 2005, 04:40 AM
if c:
dir base4.cab don't find it
booting from the 98 CD or from boot floppy with cd support
suppose <cdrom drive letter> is E:
(this shows...)
if e:
then
E\:win98\setup /d /im /iq /nd /is /nm /p j /NTLDR
or go the copy routine
c:
cd\
md win98
copy e:\win98\*.*
then run the string from the WITHIN folder you copied
c\:win98\setup /d /im /iq /nd /is /nm /p j /NTLDR

scanreg /restore (space after scanreg).
scanreg/restore will return bad command or file name.
No. No. No. Space is not needed. Been saying this for years but I guess you have to try it to make sure for yourself.;)
This so minute, it isn't worth mentioning but had to get it off my chest...again.:dizzy:
natinnyc12, seems you've tried the most obvious things. You may have to cut your losses and start over. If your computer came with restore disks, you just boot up the CD. If your system has OEM Windows 98, use bootup floppy to fdisk, partition, make 1st partition active, and format. Then boot the CD for setup.
Hope you had/have backups for important data because this will wipe everything. Looks like you already lost most anyway.
Good luck.:michaelan

If the Internet Explorer Repair Tool Verification does not work, or if Internet Explorer 5 is not listed in the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel, you may be able to start the Internet Explorer Repair tool from a command prompt:1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type the following command, and then click OK:
rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE5Maintenance "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Setup\SETUP.EXE" /g "C:\WINDOWS\IE Uninstall Log.Txt"
NOTE: This command is case sensitive.
If you need to replace a bad file from the original Internet Explorer or Windows media, use either the System File Checker (SFC) tool or the Extract tool to extract the file. For information about these tools, view the following articles in the Microsoft

Instead of hitting the shut off button hit the restart button. I figured your files were still there. I was going to suggest re-installing windows but do this first. Since you can get into safe mode see if it will go ahead and defrag while your in there. start/programs/accessories/system tools/disk defrag

If it won't defrag......boot to DOS again and type this scandisk/all/auto fix/no save/no summary/surface this will take awhile to do but let it do it and check your clusters

I have 2 problems. 1) my c drive is full. I have a d drive that is bigger, but when I move my programs to that drive then most of them do not work. I would like to run my windows and programs from the bigger drive so my computer will run faster, but c drive is the default drive, so anythime that I do something it always defaults to that drive. What do I do? I was told by some people to get an external drive, will that help? My c drive is used 3.987GB; Free - 133MB and the capacity is 4.01GB and my d drive is used - 10.6GB; Free - 26.6GB with the capacity at 37.2GB, can anyone help me?
2) when turning on my computer, I get the message that a file is missing and the windows registry referes to this file in: system.ini - then C:windows\system\Iosubsys\BsUDF.VXD I always have the push enter key and then it will proceed to load windows and all my programs. What do I do to get this to stop happening and just load?
Idnew
November 13th, 2005, 04:13 PM
Imaba How did you move them to d drive? Hint: when you install something new and it asks where to put it, change just the letter from c to d before installing, this saves time where you don't have to move it. Leave windows on c but put what you can on d. I hated it so when I formatted I just made it one drive.
Did you un-install something then start getting that error message?
Lets see if we can fix the registry. Boot to DOS(this option will be given to you when you go to shut down, put a dot in the boot to DOS). Choose command prompt only and then type in scanreg/fix. After you do that come back and tells us what happened when you re-booted.

I purchased a new drive and had it installed. Then I moved programs to my new drive, but some did not work, so I had to put them back into C drive. Whenever I have a new program, I install it on my new drive, but my probelm is that I only have 133mb left on my c drive and I need to run everthing from a bigger drive so that my computer runs faster. I also, has more memry installed to try and help, but with no room on my c drive, it is a BIG problem. Any ideas?

At some point folks it would be an excellent idea, and follow CTH guidelines, if all new requests were asked to start their own New Topic (this one thread is now on it's third different member inquiry). Hey idnew,
k......i have defragged both c and d and checked for errors.......i didn't run the advanced test just standard.......what now????.....it did crash at one point after d-fragging c......when i tried to do d...i hit ctrl,alt,del...it said windows not responding....i just hit button to wait.......then it said warning system may have become unstable or something like that......then it froze on a blank screen........i had to hit on/off button.......but then it started in normal mode......haven't switched off since......lol......i dunno why, i think maybe summin is up w/ the monitor but i have to switch the puter on and off like 10/20 times before it boots up......its an old ibm and the on/off switch is a bad design, right on the top of the cpu, my freakin cats keep jumping on top of it and turning it off......so it is always switching off instead of being properly shut down......
The total size of c drive is 1.99GB and it has 1.97GB used space and 23.1MB free space .....the total size of d is 5.84GB w/ 877MB used and 4.98GB free space.......i have put everything i can on d......but just cant seem to free up c......not sure what else i can and cannot delete......ty, Nat.

No nat don't start a new thread now. Did both drives defrag? If not do the thorough scandisk with auto fix then run defrag again. Don't just turn it off use the restart button if it freezes. Just turning the switch off could cause probs. So what's the pc doing now? Is it booting to windows now or still just safe mode? If that all went well then go to start/find/find files or folders and type this in the box *.tmp if anything comes up then go to file/select all/delete. Empty your recycle bin.
Go to this link and get the program called Fun duc app mover (http://idnew.rosiewolf.com) I'm not sure if it will fit on a floppy so save it to your hard drive. This will move your progs off of c to d. Don't get it yet unless your pc is working normal again and if it gives you the option to install on d then install it to d.

LOL Nat with the program you don't move files you move the whole programa and it will take the files with it. Like if you have MSWorks and want it on D drive it will move it there for you.
