Howdy pcwiz91,
Sounds like you installed in incorrectly. Check the CTH Tutorials Here (http://www.cybertechhelp.com/tutorial/section/computer-hardware) to make sure you have the cabling and the jumper settings correct.

Howdy:
Is this an extra hdd you installed in the system along with the original c: drive hard-drive??
If so, then Windows is recognizing it correctly and will have moved your cd-rom drive letter to e: drive or higher!!

When you installed the new hd I'm assuming you fdisked and formated it which created new partitions and if so then your cd drive will have a different letter like E F depending on how many partitions. If you double click on my computor how many drives do you see? Do you have a c drive? That should be your first drive other than the A drive.
You can check it with a boot disk and use the CD Rom support item listed
at boot.
Just put a cd in the rom and type dir /p
this should show what drive your cd is
This topic also should have been posted in the XP forum. Maybe a mod will come along and move it.

My apologies pcwiz91, if things might interfere with you arriving at the best solution.
However, Idnew, I have to ask if you have actually tried the suggestion you made. Put a bootdisk into a pc with a cd loaded, startup, and type dir /p. Strictly by what you posted, you would load to the A:\> prompt, and get a directory listing of the A: drive (with a pause, for some reason). Do a cd (change directory), and get a directory listing of that drive.
However, if someone used a standard 98 startup bootdisk (with ramdrive), and just wanted to know what drive letter their cdrom is assigned in the current setup, it is usually displayed on screen right above the A:\> prompt (like the second picture Here (http://www.cybertechhelp.com/tutorial/article/how-install-slave-hard-drive-win98)).

If everything installed ok then all your drives should be listed in your control panel.

Idnew:
Running dir /p will ONLY show the directory of the drive you are showing in DOS.. Thsus, if you are in a: drive and type dir /p, it will ONLY show you what is on a: drive.. If you are in c: drive, it will ONLY show you what is on c: drive.. NOTHING ELSE..
In order to see what is on the cd, you MUST change the active drive to the cd-rom BEFORE you type in dir /p in order to see what is on the drive..
If you don't understand DOS commands, then please don't post as if you do !!!

The only use I've found for /p (pause) or /w (wide) is when there are so many files in the directory that they scroll offscreen before I can see what's there. It still will only show what's in the directory you're looking at until you do a cd (change directory) command.

If everything installed ok then all your drives should be listed in your control panel.
Actually they would show up in 'My Computer' much easier.
Or Windows Explorer.:fyi:
Much easier than start/settings/control panel/system/Device Manager.
