I have installed Win95 on a Dell Optiplex GX50 and I am now getting the dreaded yellow astericks in the device manager for the Primary and Secondary IDE controller. Where do I or how do I rectify this ? I am having problems getting the modem running as well and I suspect these issues are inter-related. The machine was shipped with XP, but for what I am going to use it for, I have to have 95 on it.

ok, first you must find windows 95 drivers for all your devices from the dell website
www.dell.com (http://www.dell.com)
then install the drivers... since the comp was first shipped with windows XP, it will be hard to find windows 95 drivers for your devices...
just out of curiosity, why are you running it on 95 for? if its compatibility, xp can set compatability, to emulate windows 95/98
shipped with winxp, couldnt be a problem with system requirements...

Did you format and make sure XP was gone before you installed Win95? Everything that has a yellow exclamation by it in device manager click on it and remove it and reboot. You will need the newest drivers.

You will need the newest drivers.

Howdy plasticjoe:

Don't go for the newest drivers as they probably won't work.. You need to look specifically for Win95 drivers IF they even make them.. The newest drivers will be for Win2000 or XP and I have yet to see a Win95 system use anything remotely related to WinXP !!!

If they don't, try Win98 or Win98SE drivers but, if the system is that new and came with XP pre-installed, they most likely don't have Win98 drivers for your hardware anyways..
