View Full Version : Disabling a previous workplace network....

I am starting to use a laptop again after leaving a previous job. That company set me up with Windows XP Professional (I had Windows XP Home on it). They also set up their network on it, and added this computer as a "member."

Now I want to access the internet at home with my broadband access, and cannot do so. I assume the administrator set up all kinds of security (he was very techy - I am not).

What can I do now to get it back to its pre-network settings?

In addition, my husband is taking it to his new job, and wants to be able to access the new company's network and the internet.

Is there anything that can be done, short of having all of the administrator's passwords, etc?

Please let me know if you need more details.

I have gotten help here in the past, and hope someone can assist today!

Thanks - Tobyson

If your user name is not an administrator and you don't know the administrator password you are out of luck. Sorry. The only thing you can do is get the man who set up to his network to help or reload windows.

That's kind of what I figured. I will contact him, and see if he will divulge the valuable info!

Thanks.

star36, that is not really true. It may be that account they are using has admin privs.

Do you have instuctions from your ISP on setting up your connection? Can you modify your network settings? Do you have other machines at home that you want to share files with?

You should be able to modify your Local Area network connection to what is needed. You most likely need to change the connection to 'automatically' get its IP address and DNS nameserver IP address.

Each computer is assigned an IP address, correct? Is it possible the IP address was changed by that previous administrator?

Do I need to do more than just plug in my DSL cord in order to connect to the internet? I was hoping to just open my browser (have both IE and Firefox) and get connected right away - did not happen.

I have one other computer that connects to the internet. I do not necessarily need to share files with it (I am using a Lexar JumpDrive if I need to transfer files).

Most likley the computer was setup to run on a domain. What you need is to set it to run on a workgroup. I suspect that your IP is set to get automatic from a DNS server. Unfortunatlly you must have administrator priviledges to make these changes. Sorry.

Do this for information.
Start
control panel
user accounts
Look for the account with the login name you are using and tell me what type it is.

just nuke the hard drive and re-install the operating system. the HD prolly has all sorts of corp. security / tracking cr@p on there anyway.

btw...shouldnt you have given the laptop back seeing as how u no longer work for them?

Thanks for the tip.

FYI - I had to purchase the laptop myself. I used it in the office because they did not have enough computers to accommodate all of their employees. They simply made it compatible to their system.
