icons on the desktop

I have quite a lot of icons on my desktop. I arranged them so that they do not hid my background picture. But lately my computer booted in safe mode (for no evident reason) and now I cannot change the location of my icons. I tried to do it by opening the desktop window and tried ll the options here, but the icons return in rows on the left of my desktop, every time that I boot.
Please help

Did you try right clicking on your desktop and turn off auto arrange?

yes, the autoarrange is not checked.
i can place the icons on the desktop as I will, but they return to the left side at each booting

Mine take spells doing that sometime so I check auto arrange and reboot. Then I take the check off of auto arrange and reboot again and usually that makes it stick for some reason.

There is a registry tweak that might solve that particular problem.

*WARNING* Becareful editing the registry, it can cause you problems if your not careful. Only attempt this if you are comfortable.


Run regedit, then go to the following key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Policies\Explorer

If you don’t see a setting named "NoSaveSettings" (no quotes), add it as a binary value.

Edit this new setting and enter the following value: 00 00 00 00

With this new setting in place, Windows will save your current arrangement each time you shut down and reboot.

Exit the registry editor, adjust your icons as necessary and restart Windows.
