I don't know if this really fits into this forum...sorry if it doesn't...

Okay, my computer has been acting up within the last three days. It will freeze everything up to a minute every couple of minutes. This freezes the movement of the mouse but if sound is on, the sound just skips like a scratched CD. While this is going on we have noticed that the orange light next to the CDRW drive is either lite or blinking (with no CD in it).

I have a Compaq Persario 900 mHz Pentium 3 with a cdrw drive and a dvd drive that runs Windows ME.

Programs at Start-Up~
AIM
MSMSGS
PC health
System Tray
LoadPowerProfile
NvCplDaemon
nwiz
Hidserv
CC2KUI
AVG_CC
Avgserv9.exe
PowerReg Scheduler

128.0 MB Ram on it.

I have run various virus checks on the computer, each coming up with the same result--no viruses. I have just removed all spyware I found on my computer. I have not installed or uninstalled any programs recently. There is no message that pops up when it freezes.

Recap of problem--Computer randomly freezes while it seems that the CD rom drive is looking for a CD. There are no viruses that can be found. Problem occures every couple of minutes.

Thanks so much for your time.

Not sure what the trouble is yet, but I do believe that you still have spyware onboard....

CC2KUI ....Comet Cursor connected as far as I know and Comet Cursor is first class spyware.

Also...off the top of my head....see if you have your anti-virus checking the removable drives on some schedule. If so, the AV program will spin the drive looking for a disk to scan. Keep in mind, as well, that anti-virus scanners aren't designed to catch Trojans. Make sure that your AV has the most recent updates, too.

Do you recall what you were doing when this problem first started? Installed anything new? Using the CD-RW just prior to the start of this? Burning...playing?

Does it happen in safe mode?

Right now I'm using AVG virus scanner that checks "all files and removable media." Is that the same as removable drives?

I checked my computer for Comet Cursor...knowing that I had it on in the past, but it didn't come up in the searches.

Before this happened nothing out of the ordinary happened. No one has burned any CDs in almost a month and a half. No programs have been added or deleted (as far as anyone is aware of).

I haven't experienced it in safe mode, but honestly I haven't spent much time in safe mode (for some reason our internet doesn't work from that mode). Would you suggest I try it out there for a while and see if the problem occurs?

Windows ME is a very buggy windows. Unfortanituly, you cannot downgrade that because of a write protection in the computer. If you built it yourself, then maybe it will work.
