Did you look in device manager and see if you have any ! by the modem or USB?

ok I've cracked it sort of. As long as the modem lead is not plugged in until the computer has booted up it works finefor some strange reason. thanks anyway for the help and suggestions.

Windows 98 has a known problem with USB. MS has released a patch to fix this problem, but many still experienced the problems after installing the patch. When USB first came out it was supposed to be the greatest thing that ever happened to computing. You were supposed to be able to daisy chain 127 device to a single USB port and have them all work flawlessly. It just never worked out that way. Later versions of Windows(Win 2K, XP or even Linux)handle USB much better than Win 98 or ME, but the problems just never went away with Windows 98.
