Honor our veterans on Veteran's Day for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice.

Remembrance Day is also on November 11 - it is set aside as a day to remember the sacrifice of those who have died for Australia in wars and conflicts. It was originally known as Armistice Day.http://home.earthlink.net/~ladyjeweler/images/flag_of_Australia2.jpg

Remembering Canadians Who Fought and Died in War. On November 11 Canadians wear poppies and gather at war memorials across Canada to pay tribute to those who died in war.

Amen to that.
I'd like to think today's a day to remember all veterans, worldwide. Regardless of country or language, they all performed service and sacrifice on behalf of the rest of us.

A Veteran Died Today:(

He was getting old and paunchy, and his hair was falling fast; and he sat around the post home, telling stories of the past. Of a war that he had fought in the deeds that he had done; sharing exploits with his buddies, all were heroes, everyone. And 'thos sometimes to his neighbors, his tales became a joke, all his comrades listened, for they know whereof he spoke. But, we'll hear his tales no longer, of ol' Bob has passed away, and the world's a little poorer, for a Veteran died today.
No, he won't be mourned by many, just his children and his wife, for Bob lived a plain and ordinary sort of life. He held a job, raised a and quietly went his way, and the world won't note his passing, 'tho a Veteran died today.
See, when politicans leave this earth, their bodies lie in state, while thousands note their passing, and proclaim that they were great. Their life stories are grandly told, from the time they were young, but the passing of a Veteran goes unnoticed, and unsung.
Is the greatest contribution to the welfare of our land, some jerk who breaks his promises and cons his fellow man? Or the ordinary person, who in times of war and strife, goes off to serve this Country and offers up his life?
Now, the politican's salary and the style in which he lives, are sometimes disproportionate to the services he gives. While the ordinary Veteran who offered up his all, is paid off with a medal and, perhaps, a pension small. It's so easy to forget them, for it was so long ago, that our Bobs, Jims and Larrys went to battle, that we know. It was not the politicians, with their compromise and ploys, who won for us the freedom that our Nation now enjoys. Should you find yourself in danger, with an enemy at hand, would you really want some "cop out" with his wishy-washy stand? Or, would you want a Veteran who swore he would defend GOD, COUNTRY, FAMILY, and would fight until the end.
Yes, he was just a common Veteran and his ranks are growing thin, but his presence still remind us, we may need his kind again. For when foreigners are in trouble, then the Military's part, is to clean up all the troubles that the politicans start.
So, if we cannot do him honor, while he's here to hear the praise, then at least let's pay him homage at the ending of his days. Perhaps a simple headline in the paper that might say.
OUR COUNTRY IS IN MOURNING
FOR A VETERAN DIED TODAY.:cry2:

Just for you Mr. Bean:
"Yr un aeliau, a'r un olwg,
A'r un drem, a'r gŵr drwg"

Don't ask me what it means.
Tom Jones was an icon Welsh singer but I only heard the English part of his songs. I had panties thrown at me a couple of times but a 250lb woman was in them at the time. No fun at all.:rotflmao:

In New Zealand we have a day set aside to commemorate New Zealanders killed in war and to honour returned servicemen and women on 25th April each year, Anzac Day. We also wear red poppies on Anzac Day and a Dawn Service is held at the War Memorial in each city.

Military personnel, returned servicemen and women and other members of the community group around the Memorial with pride of place going to the war veterans.

A short service follows with a prayer, hymns (including Kipling's 'Recessional' or 'Lest We Forget') and a dedication which concludes with the last verse of Laurence Binyon's 'For the Fallen':

They shall grow not old as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them nor the years condemn
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

The Last Post is played followed by a minute's silence and Reveille. A brief address follows after which the hymn 'Recessional' is sung. The service concludes with a closing prayer and the singing of the National Anthem. It is very emotional.

A Parade follows with returned service personnel wearing their medals and marching behind banners and standards. The veterans are joined by other community groups including members of the armed forces, the Red Cross, cadets and veterans of other countries' forces.

As a kid, I can remember watching my grandfather marching, I was so proud of him. That lovely old man, all kitted up with his medals stood so straight and tall. :) He served during WW2 and was on the Achilles at the Battle of River Plate (http://www.historylearningsite.co.uk/battle_of_the_river_plate.htm).

So to veterans everywhere, we must not forget.

Happy Veteran's Day Everyone!

I wish to thank all veterans for their commitment, sacrifice, patriotism, and everything they have done for their country.

My grandpa also served in WWII, although he was back a long time before I was born. He was a great person, and was always my hero growing up.

A sad as a day like this is for a great many folks, I have to say that it's also sad and extremly sickening to think that rather than the list of "those remembered" staying the same ammount, the list goes up so very much each year. :(
