Crashed? Like how, what does it not do? Have you tried to restore it? To do that boot to DOS with a boot disk if necessary then type c: and at the prompt type scanreg/restore and restore it to the last date it was working, but if you need to format put the boot disk in and boot with it and at the prompt type FDISK/MBR I have complete instructions here with pictures>>>>>>>>>>

If you choose to do a reformat/reinstall, don't forget that everything will be wiped from the drive including your data...pictures, email messages, address book, documents, financial records, music, browser bookmarks (favorites).
If there's anything like that you want to keep, be sure to back it up somewhere other than the harddrive. If you have a CD writer, burn it all to CDs.
Also be aware that "format and reinstall" is almost a mantra in computer repair shops. It is the fastest, surest way to eliminate problems and in most computer shops, time is at a premium.
When I was running Windows 98, I routinely did a format and reinstall about once a year because it is the fastest, surest way to clean things up. So I'm not trying to talk you out of it; just want to make sure you know about the need to back up your stuff first.

Hi guitar
You are obviously not reading the links provided. Please read them.

Boot into BIOS and make the first boot device the cd-rom.. Put your XP cd into the drive and press F10 to save the change to BIOS and exit..
The system will boot using the XP cd as the boot device (you should see a message to boot from the cd)..
From there, you will get an option to remove all current partitions and install XP.. That's all that is needed as XP will do the rest..
Of course, this will only work with an original XP cd and not with one that has been downloaded or burnt (different setup procedure)..

guitar - the underlined words in the previous posts are all links. Click on the underlined words to open a page with information on the questions you've asked.
First, formatting the drive removes everything so if that's what you decide to do, uninstalling 98 isn't necessary...it'll be gone along with everything else, leaving a nice, blank harddrive to install XP on.
If you want to keep all your data - pictures, documents, music, address book, browser bookmarks (Favorites), email messages, etc. - without backing it all up to either another harddrive or CD, then you don't want to format the drive. Instead, you want to install XP over top of 98 which is called an "upgrade install." You do not need to uninstall 98 first.
If you have all your stuff backed up or don't care whether it's all erased, then formatting the drive and installing XP is the way to go.
If your current installation of Windows 98 has problems, be aware that installing XP over top may not, and probably will not, fix those problems. You'll likely end up with XP with problems.
Formatting the drive (wiping it clean) and installing XP is the preferred way to go.

Yep.. that's it.. Make sure you have your keycode handy as well.. AND, do NOT be connected to the net..
As soon as XP is installed, make sure the firewall is activated and you install and anti-virus program.. (people have been infected with sasser and msblast the second they connect to the net with an unprotected system)..
Then, get to the Microsoft Update page and get Service Pack 2 and all remaining Critical Updates installed..

Unless you have the install program for the av on disk, then that won't work.. You will need to download it and burn it to disk first..

I have av installed on my computer how do i go about burning it to disc.
Murray S.

You can't burn an already installed program and expect it to work.. it won't.. You need to download and burn the "INSTALL" program for the av and run that after..
ie: You are running AVG.. You download the "setup" program for AVG to your computer.. Now, you burn THAT file to a disk..

if i am doing an upgrade from 98 to xp and have av on my computer will it still be their after doing the upgrade.

IF you are using an upgrade cd, everything should stay..
However, upgrading is NOT the recommended way to go as it will only compound problems you are having already..

ok i am going to purchase a copy of windows xp after i get my computer back from the shop were they are doing a wipe and reload of with windows 98 2nd edition. the reason for them putting 98 back in is because that i have not yet purchased the xp. I see that i can purchase a copy off the internet cheaper then the guy at the store wants to charge. About $50 cheaper . I will have no problems in my computer when i get it back from the shop so i will purchase a copy and put the disc in and follow directions and if i am right it will up grade my system from 98 to xp.
