Verrrry slooooow re-boot

Once again I throw myself to the mercy of the generous wisdom of much more knowledgable people on the site.

I have finally "upgraded" to Windows 98SE from Win98 and all appeared to go smoothly.

Once I re-booted into the new OS, my hard drive runs continuously and it takes nearly 8 minutes (yes, you read that correctly) to completely re-boot and almost 5 minutes to log into my webbrowser. Previously, my total bootup time was 27 seconds and a few seconds to connect to my browser. (I'm on dialup - yup, still out in the sticks!)

I have just completed a painfully slow virus scan and nothing showed up.

Would anyone have any idea of where I should look to attempt to overcome this problem please? Much appreciated.

rodger

I apologize if I created another post re: this topic; I attempted to edit the original message and re-post but nothing happened. My new info. was I may have finally found the source of the almost dead loading -- In System Properties, Performance Tab the following was indicated (this follows several hours of program removal, re-boots, etc.):
-Compatibility-mode paging reduces overall system performance.
Drive A is using MS-DOS compatibility mode file system.
Drive C is using MS-DOS compatibility mode file system.
It goes on to say that Windows was unable to id a real-mode driver or memory-resident program loaded in Config.sys or Autoexec.bat file. You will see another message that lists the name of the driver or program causing the problem. (I could not find any such thing after two hours of looking).

Would anyone out there have any idea what I should try to attempt to overcome this mess please?

Thanks

Roger

downgraded IMO but have you tried to un-install it and see if it goes back to working like it did. Did you install SE over 98? SE has lots of problems.

SE is much better so I don't think that is the issue in itself. Did you do the update CD, or was this a full version of Win98SE? If the latter did you format the hard drive before installing? If not, there may be your problem.

Hello Idnew and GX1_Man - Thanks for taking the time to respond.
To make a long story short, I purchased a Win98SE Upgrade to permit me to install a DVD drive (I was told that Win98 would not support a DVD burner). I installed the upgrade and that is when this thing slowed to near death. Over a period of 14 hours yesterday I did the following:

-scanned for viruses (no identified problems)
-ran Spybot (no problems)
-defragged C Drive
-cleaned temp. files and cookies
-uninstalled Win98SE
-re-installed Win98 from my original CD
I don't really understand anything about the floppy and C drives using MS-Dos compatibility mode and although I'm not very knowledgeable about the working of computers, this might be the problem regarding the slowness of the machine.

I guess I should have left things alone as I'm not in a position to buy a new machine as I am retired and living off a pension. I'll forego the DVD I guess.

Well that's bull to start with as I have the DVD that came with my machine and later installed A DVD burner and both work fine on my Win98. My sister was having so much trouble with SE, we formatted and put full Win98 on hers.

Ok if it hasn't been over 5 days. Reboot to DOS and at the prompt type scanreg/restoreand restore it to the date before you installed SE. If that gets you back to where you were then go into safe mode(tap on the F8 key till you hear a beep)In safe mode defrag.

Hi Idnew:
This thing is getting the best of me I guess - I should have also included that I did the scanreg/restore after I removed SE and defragged in Safe Mode and that is how I finally managed to get back to the internet last night.

I think I'll finally throw in the towel and clear everything off C drive and try putting 98 on again - I'll loose a lot but I have nothing to save that much info. on and I don't think installing the DVD burner would work properly with the trouble I'm having with the drives showing MS-DOS compatibility mode.

Thanks for the info. re: using DVD with 98. There is so much misinformation out there that we old coots especially don't know what to believe.

Formatting is good to do although I hate doing it. Make sure you have all your drivers handy.

Here is a thread that might help you to format.
