Question Problems & Questions 98se/xp

The first question is: Can I network an xp system and a 98se system. Secondly: Do I have to have a hub when only 2 computers are involved. I have attempted to connect both computers directly via ethernet cable and the xp system says that it is not hooked up at all. The 98 system shows no problems but will not connect to the other system. I am new to networking and would love some help so I don't have to have a technician come do it. Both systems have 10/100 cards.

Yes it is possible...

My question what type of cable you using?

If you are using a standard RJ45 cable the reason your network does not work is because the singles are causing collisions hence your network seems not be working.

Solution: Crossover cable
