problems running Defrag

My PC is running Win98. Until I switched my service provider from Sprint dial-up to Sympatico high speed light, I had no problems running Windows Defra on my hard drive. Since switching service providers I can start the defrag program but it remains at 0% and does not complete the process. I am not sure where to start with this problem, any suggestions? I did a virus scan, nothing detected. Everything else seems to be working properly. Thanks...

Try running it in Safe Mode. To boot into Safe Mode, start repeatedly pressing and releasing the F8 key when the computer starts booting up (if you hold the key down, it may stop booting with a keyboard error message). That should get you to the boot menu where you can choose Safe Mode.

In Safe Mode, nothing loads but the absolute essentials so if something running in the background is messing with defrag, being Safe Mode should eliminate that problem.

I use Killwindows, free program from easydesk software.Shuts down everything
while defrag operates, then restores system to same exact state..Holding
down Ctrl while booting should bring up that menu with 98,F8 is for XP.

It would also be good to run a disk cleanup before you defragment and remove all your temporary files, cookies etc. Also run chkdsk bfore the defrag. I would personally recommend a third party defragmenter to the Win98 one. You might download a trial version and try it.

Also sometimes you need to do a thorough scan start/programs/accessories/system tools/scan disk----put a dot in thorough and a check in automatically fix errors ---after that finishes then try defragging again

Did you try the suggestions given above? Did you run scan disk/defrag in safe mode? Its possible there could be something writing to disk. Also make sure you have minimum free space needed for the defrag. Else run a disk cleanup.

You need to do a thorough scan start/programs/accessories/system tools/scan disk----put a dot in thorough and a check in automatically fix errors ---after that finishes then try defragging again---do it in safe mode so the screensaver doesn't come on.
