Need Help Win98 Problem..
i thought i would post here and see if you guys could help me..because i am really frustrated right now..
I just got a newish graphics card and was installing it on my old gateway system with win 98 on it.. was having a bit of trouble with it but was finally figuring it all out... shortly after i changed the bios to run PCI for my new PCI card my system stopped booting... i thought maybe it was the cahnge in bios othat i had made so i put it back to my old card(my Monitor plug i mean) and rebooted again.. still it wouldnt boot and was asking me for a boot disk. I had a bootdisk so i inserted it and it ran and did its thing and started to boot my computer.. then it stopped and said this. Win 98 has detected Drive C does noto contain a valid FAT or FAT32 Partition, here are sonme probable causes for this: 1.The drive may need to be partitioned using FDISK from DOS commant prompt 2. You may be using a 3rd party partition program... if you are blah blah remove it and restart yuor system using a boot disk and follow the onscreen instructions 3. Some virus's can make your drive not read correctly(or somethign like this) By now im freaking out at my computer. I just reformatted this thing not to long ago and reinstalled windows 98 SE to it. So imagine my frustration when this happens when i try to install my new graphics card. I tried using FDISK as it said but i get the message no fixed disks present. I tried format c: and i got Format not supported on Drive C, Format Terminated. I tried running A: setup as well. that didnt exactly work either... said something like if i have HPFS or NTFS that i need to run a boot partition disk to partition my drive. Any help you awsome people couild give me would be much appreciated. I dont want to have to get another computer just yet even though i hate mine id like to see if i couldl fix it.. thanks! >< Edit: Oh i even tried that Nuke Program that Someone suggest in this thread.. didnt work. nothing had changed... |

Try to put everythinig as it was in the way of hardware.
Now get to pure dos. You know, boot and keep tapping F8 until boot menu comes and choose #6. Or boo from a bootdisk and at the A: prompt type c:/scanreg/restore Type scanreg/restore See if there is a date of or prior to all these changes and pick that one. After it restores, reboot and see what happens. It's just not quite as simple as it once was but neither is anything else. Good luck.

Someone just told me to try resetting my bios manually...with the jumper so i guess i will try this scanreg/restore thing first, then try that. If anyone has any more tips or ideas please let me know X_x

The command should be:
scanreg /restore At a C: prompt with a space between the "scanreg" and the "/restore". |

Well, that's you and that's me. I felt offended. You apparently did not.
What else is new in this 50/50 world? If I was out of bounds, a mod would have jumped me. (still might. who knows?) Thanks for the feedback. I stand by my remarks. I did say, you're welcome. No further comment.

Eh sorry if it seemed Rude, i just felt ignored by most of the people... maybe i didnt explain things right, you atleast tried to help Nick thank you. What i did was i reset all the default settings after pressing f1 and going to setup...Im not new at computers but i dont know that much at all. ALso if anyone knows if my Geforce 440 graphics card could of caused this, thatd be good to know.. cus my computer stopped working right after i tried to install it and ran the bios for the PCI geforce card. I am now back on my crappy AGP, my system is an old gateway 433mhz ... so iw as wondering if i can even use this Geforce card :/

This was a pleasant surprise to hear from you again, especially with an apology.
Great people at this forum full of knowledge on any subject to do with computers and more. But patience is necessary when a response in not forthcoming immediately. People work and have lives. This is just for fun and a chance to help and learn. As for the GeForce 440, do you have the latest driver updates? You know brand new components right out of the box may be out of date already. Are you running 98SE as I think that is a minimum? Let us know how things are going. Some others may have a suggestion but you should start a new post on this new problem and detail all the specs for cpu and geforce 440. Good luck.

hi
Hmmm, nothing new? Nick finally blew off some steam. GOOD. it was accepted, that was good too. I got streesed out somehow, and stayed away from non-real life things for this reason... your MX 440 card could be wrong voltage, so let us figure this out... gateway 433, that would be pentium 2 huh? agp1 was around. agp 2x (backward compatible to 1x) and 4x (backward compatible to 2x) was around the corner, and this took just like only four months to happen, if I recall correct.. 4x cards started to use a lower voltage, some was not even backward compatible... and a "recent' MX 440, I think that uses 1.8V rather than 3.3, being agp 4x.
