Desktop opens frozen with My Computer highlited

When I open (bootup) my computer the desk top opens properly except it is frozen, the mouse cursor moves but does not function and the My Computer Icon is highlighted. It does the same thing in Safe Mode. I have run Scanreg /fix in command prompt and it indicates that the regestrty has been repaired but there is no change. Same results on reboot.
I can get it to boot to an A:\ prompt with a boot disk but none of the utilities there indicate any problems. I can access my CD-ROM from the boot disk and have reinstalled and still get the same results.
Is anyone familiar with a DOS utility that might be helpful.
If not just send me a rope.

Sounds like a hardware problem to me. Possibly video card or memory. You can start by testing your systems memory:

http://www.memtest86.com/

If the memory tests ok, I'd try to get a different video card for test purposes.

Did you install anything new? When did this problem start? If it hasn't been over 5 days you can try a restore. Boot to DOS like you did for the scanreg/fix and try to restore it by typing scanreg/restore
