I have a PC with VM-Ware on it and was thinking of installing linux.

I've used Knoppix LiveCD before and it worked quite well but for this it would be installing a virtual OS.

I was thinking of Gnoppix or Debian. Gnoppix because the Knoppix site recommended it for a HDD install and Debian because Gnoppix recommends it as it is the base for it.

Have any of you installed Linux as a virtual OS and which distro would you choose?

Note that this is just for testing and will not be used for any specific tasks.
I would like a nice easy install, so which distros offer that?

If you want a simple route check out this page from VMWare (http://www.vmware.com/vmtn/vm/). It has some virtual machines you can download and use.

Cool :D I'll look into them.

Any preference on a distro for this use?

The only distro I have ever used with WM-Ware was Slack 10 and it worked well for me, however I'm not a big fan of VM because in the past it was very slow and unstable. This was a long time ago so most likely alot has changed and VM is way better now.

The way to go if really want to use it is to go with the ESX server, which really is a customized linux distro. You get better performance than with GSX, which sits on top of linux or windows.

I've heard rumors that solaris x86 can also be run in VMWare, but haven't seen it done.
