Drunk people often don't act very responsibly. That's why there are laws for people who serve alcohol, essentially making them professional babysitters. He broke the law, somebody died. Sounds fair to hold him accountable especially if it resulted in death.
Quote:
The court said it could not hold the bartender accountable for the death itself, but sentenced him to prison for illegally serving alcohol to a clearly intoxicated person.

The ruling said the bartender intentionally contributed to the excess by drinking shots of water, tricking the victim into what he thought was a drinking contest.

"In the court's opinion, it is hard to imagine a more serious case of excessive alcohol serving," said the ruling, which also revoked the bartender's right to have any job that involves serving alcohol for five years.

Deltree, I hear you but many others sing a different tune, especially the law.
An inebriated person will not make rational decisions like when to quit, when to not drive, when to not run over someone, etc,. A bar owner can be held totally responsible for a drunk in an accident if proven most of the drinking was done at an establishment or the establishment knew the person was drunk when being served anyway. Many cases like this happen all the time.
It's a matter of taking responsibility of someone who chooses not to take the responsibility of hurting him/her self or another. Is that right? Man, I tell you, I've been around a long time and have seen people slap falling down drunk or falling off a barstool and still have another drink served to them. After all, money is money, right? Should a person take their own responsibility? Of course. Should babysitting a grownup become necessary? Yes. Unfortunate, but yes.

Not only bars and such, but right in your own home can a nightmare develop.
Don't let a house party ruin your holidays.

Everyone make your holidays enjoyable and safe. I offer my services as a designated driver all the time but have very few who actually accept it.

ha ha haaaeuuaarghgnk

my friend's grandad laughed so much at an episode of 'the goodies' (uk 70s comedy) that he had a heart-attack and died. grandma sent them a thank-you letter for giving him a happy send-off. -- perhaps she missed the opportunity to make history. i don't know of anybody going to prison for comedy. (tho i can think of many who deserve to.)
