Windows ME Not Running Properly

Something happened to Win ME - It boots up but half of the icons are gone and nothing works. Tried rebooting with recovery disk but it doesn't read the CD (light flashes, but then nothing happens). The accessories are gone so I can't restore. The screen color changed also. If I try to open anything, I get an error message about some activ* program. Any suggestions?

are you running an up to date antivirus program? if so, and there doesn't appear to be any problems then i would think it has to do with active x. might do a little research at www.microsoft.com
