View Full Version : I can't use IE anymore!

I have no idea why, but I can't get IE to function properly. I can use IE for about 5 minutes, but then it stops working. Web sites won't open, and I can't even go back to pages I had just visited. At first, I thought it was a problem with my ISP, but I tested my older [much slower] computer (it's connected to the same line), and it doesn't encounter the same problem. Is there anything I can do other than reinstalling IE or another browser?

YOu could try the IE repair.
Goto Add/Remove Programs, Remove IE, you should get the option to repair.

The only IE-related programs I found in Add/Remove were Compaq IE Custom and Compaq IE5 Customization. Is it one of those?

Microsoft Internet Explorer wasn't listed?

No, it wasn't there.

If you are running WinXP, it will not be there. It's a protected program (New relases will have the option to uninstall as part of the lawsuit.)
Here is one [complicated] option -
How To Clean-Install IE6 On XP
Reinstalling IE6 on XP can be a hassle because there's no easy way to
*un*install a version that's gone bad.
If you have good backups, of course, you can revert to a known-good
state. (See http://www.langa.com/backups/backups.htm ) But many people
still don't bother with backups. In that case, if your copy of IE6 goes
bad, you're stuck. If you try to download and install a clean copy, the
download wizard either doesn't provide the option, or chokes and says
(in effect) "Been there, done that."
The best solution is restoring your system to a known-good state via
backup, but if that option isn't available to you, try these links.
Microsoft has posted a generic registry-edit workaround at
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q304872 .
But users report that the Microsoft-sanctioned technique doesn't always
work, and have found other workarounds. You'll have to do some poking
around among the results returned by this link in order to find a
solution that matches your specific situation (there's no universal
answer, alas).
http://groups.google.com/groups?q=reinstall+ie6+xp&hl=en&btnG=Google+Search
In any case, it's good to know that an IE6 reinstall on XP is at least
possible, and that others have succeeded in doing just that.

Internet Explorer is found in Add/Remove in XP. It's found under Windows Components. Select it and it will remove Explorer. If you want to reinstall it , select it again and it will reinstall. This doesn't always work though, because in reality it's not really uninstalling, but rather just sort of hidden
If you're running XP and that doesn't work your best bet is to do a repair of XP by booting to the XP CD.
Before doing that though you might want to attempt to find out what the problem is. Are there any error messages? Check your event logs for error messages, etc. See if they give you any additional info.
And if you're not using XP.....
In previous versions of Windows, I.E. is only found in Add/Remove after you have done an upgrade from the original browser that came with the CD. In those operating systems, whenever you use Add/Remove for I.E. all you're really doing is reverting to a previous version.....until you get back to the original....then you can't do it anymore,...and it's no longer found in Add/Remove.

I don't seem have 'Windows Components" in my Add/Remove list. Does something have to be configured to show that option?
Even when I have tried to uninstall IE using Norton Clean Sweep, Uninstall Wizard, I am able to begin the process, but it stops and tells me that it's a protected file and cannot be uninstalled.
Thank-you

Oh, the one right in front of my face  Thanks.
Are you sure you can uninstall IE 6 in WinXP? I see the program in the list, but it my understanding that with WinXP, it just cannot be uninstalled. Also, the excerpt I posted is from the "LangaList" news letter, which addresses the same problem. (He's a smart dude)
So, I guess my question could easily be answered by somebody running WinXP with IE6, who has in fact uninstalled it.
Thank-You.
And thanks to the thread starter, who coat tails I am riding.
