Unhappy Can't print bodies of emails or webpages

For the last couple of months my work pc has not been printing bodies of emails or web pages. It can print anything else from other programs, such as text in Word or photos in Photoshop etc but just will not print web pages or bodies of emails in Outlook Express. It actually prints the header of the email but not the body. It will print an unfound image icon (x within a square) instead. If I look at print preview for web pages I get the x in a square also. I have checked the printer settings and internet settings and cannot find anything that looks wrong.

I used to be able to print both and as I said I can print things from other programs so it's not the actual printer, it just seems to be something to do with printing internet related items.

A couple of months ago we installed new antivirus software and a firewall. I wondered if either of these might have caused the problem but again have checked the settings on both and can't see anything that looks like it may have done.

Anyone know how to fix this!? Everyone I've asked so far seems to be stumped.

Shari

The only thing I can think could have even a remote possibility of being the problem is the option in Tools>Options that lets you turn on/off the printing of page backgrounds

Thanks for the suggestion but that was one of the boxes I definitely checked. And yes, the page background box was ticked.

Hi
I am new to this site but I am having the same problem as Black Velvet. Two weeks ago, when I tred to print out email, only the header would print. We have gone through all the settings we could find, reinstalled the printer driver, looked through Microsoft websites. Can't seem to find out what is doing this.

Hi Black Velvet and Paula K. Welcome to CTH.

There are a couple of reasons why this might happen. Try the easiest option first. In Internet Explorer, click on the View > Encoding and if Auto Select is checked, uncheck it.

If this did not help, we may have to edit an entry in the Registry. Make sure that you backup your Registry before making any changes.

Close Internet Explorer and Outlook Express and go to Start > Run and type:

regedit

Then click OK. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Internet Explorer/Main and look in the right hand pane for the entry "Use StyleSheets". The Value Data should be set to "Yes".

If its not, select Use StyleSheets with your mouse and then click on Edit > Modify. A Dialogue Box will open. Where it says Value Data, type:

Yes

Then OK. Close your Registry Editor and try printing now. Did this help?

Thanks AnnMarie!
your first suggestion did the trick. We don't know how that indicator changed but after we unchecked it, we were able to print email.

To Ann_Marie,
Hi, I tried to do the registry thing, but there was NO listing for style sheet.
I didn't see anywhere to grab it with the mouse??? So not sure what you meant.
I have win xp, is this maybe why my registry doesn't have the style sheets?
I am having the same problem, printing incomplete pages, only since I hooked up new printer.
The HP people don't know what causes this problem.
I would like to try the registry thing, but need help, any appreciated, thanks, Karen

Hi karenalice - if the "Use StyleSheets" entry does not exist in your Registry then this is not the source of your problem.

You say your printer prints incomplete pages. Is this just on the Internet or does this happen using any program. What model printer do you have and what have the HP Techs tried in order to help you?

printer probs

HI, Ann-Marie,
Thanks for the quick reply.
The printer prints ok in WORD, but I tried 2 browsers and it did the same thing.
The tech support at HP said they were aware of the problem, researching it!! But yet I printed ok out of my Epson printer, just got a new one.
The tech at HP had me unplug, reboot, change settings in ADVanced, internet settings, something about print a background, he had me checkbox it. And he tried making margins larger.
Also tried in greyscale and black, vs color.
Am wishing it is something easy, like the registry.
Any help appreciated. karenalice
It is a HP Deskjet 930C

Hi again karenalice - if it happens with both browsers then it is most likely a printer configuration problem of some sort. I checked out the HP website for you. Have a look at this. It sounds a lot like your problem. See if there any fixes in it that you havent tried.

Hi AnnMarie

I am having the same trouble with printing webpages and email and I'd like to try your first suggestion, but I don't know what you mean by "view" in Internet Explorer? When I click on Internet Explorer I don't see anything that says view. I just downloaded the new beta version 7 of IE. Please help if you can. Thanks, Pete mrpete1939@yahoo.com

you really need to start your own thread. but you can try deleting the files in your temporary internet folder. If that does not work, start a new thread.

At the top of the Internet Explorer window you should see the words File, Edit, View, Favorites, Tools and Help.

If you don't see that, press and hold one of the Alt keys (next to the spacebar) and press the V key to get the View menu to open.
