where can i see what im getting befor i put onto pc is there a link which you can down load a trial software of linux i have seen this linux stuff and its good and every time i go to one of these websites and click onto the thing that i want to download nothing happens and all i want is to see this linux on my pc screen but not put onto hhd

Your going to want to try out a live cd. It is basically a linux operating system that runs completely off of a disk without installing anything to the hard drive. I normally recommend simplymepis to people who are new to linux. It functions as a live cd and an installation cd. You can also check out distrowatch.com, to see if another distro sounds better to you. Simplymepis is somewhat ugly by default in my opinion but dont let that turn you away as it is very easy to change.

You are still going to need to download an iso and burn it to the disk as an iso or bootable disk. Also make sure your bios are set to boot from the cd rom.
