Have a look at this link that was recently posted in a recent thread
http://www.devhood.com/tutorials/tutorial_details.aspx?tutorial_id=405

Also, Red Hat 9.0 is pretty old now and unsupported. You may want to think about updating to a more recent version. RedHat is only an enterprise distro now, but you could have a look at Fedora Core, which is basically a community developed version of RedHat.

I'll need you to give the exact error it gives you concerning bad partitions, and LBA.

Would you be able to download a linux live-cd (about a 700mb download)? It would be helpful if you were able to download knoppix (http://www.knoppix.org/) (http://www.knoppix.org/%29), burn it to a cd and boot from it. Then we could go over some more diagnostics of your system, as well as fix whatever partition problem it has. If you are able to download it, what you will be downloading is a 'cd image' with a '.iso' exentsion. If you have nero or a similar cd burning program on windows, you can burn it to a cd using the 'burn cd image or saved project' option, which will make it bootable. From there, all you have to do is insure your bios is set to boot from your cdrom drive first, put the cd in, and boot.

You asked what LBA was....LBA is short for Logical Block Addressing. It gives the BIOS an enhanced translation method that allows for larger hard drive sizes (up to 2 terabytes), by providing the OS with a long list of Logical Block Addresses instead of the Cylinder, Heads, Sector configuration.

I do have a lot of stuff and maybe a new linux too, on DVD, but since i don't have a DVD Drive, i can't use any of it....give me two days, and i'll put up a lot more problems:-) thanks!

here are the errors i get :

After i press next on the mouse selection area :

1. Partition table on /dev/hdb is incosistent. Often this happens becoz linux detected the BIOS geometry incorrectly, but this does not appear to be the case here. It is safe to igrnore, but ignoring may cause (fixable) problesm with some boot loaders, and may cause problems with FAT file systems. using LBA is recommended.

i ignore it.

then, i select automatic partitioning and uncheck /dev/hdb (the 80 GB hard drive), and keep the /dev/hda option checked. get this error when i click on okay.

Error Partitioning :
could not allocate requested partitions. Could nto allocate partitions as primary partitions.

on "okay-ing", i get another error :

Automatic Partitioning Error :
1. You have not defined a root partition (/) which is required for installation of RHL to comtinue. Can happen if there is not enuff space on u'r hard drive.........."

attaching a screen shot of my "Disks"

and that's it......i get stuck at the partitioning step, and then i reboot in XP.

help me!!

when you put the first redhat disk in it gives you the option to just use the free space on your hd is there a reason you are not doing that?
