Problems with wireless

Hi, I am running Windows XP SP 2 and IE 6 on my laptop. I usually access the internet with a dial up connection, which works fine. However, I am not having any luck with wireless services in airports. I can connect to the wireless, but I cannot see any web sites. I only get the message that "the web page is unavailable or you are not connected." I have tried multiple combinations of checking and unchecking stuff in the LAN settings, turning the firewall on and off, but have not found the magic combination.
