unix filesystem

i had a usb hard drive attatched to my mac os 10.4 computer and formatted it using the unix filesystem- planning on moving it to my ubuntu linux server.

i was able to put files on it afterwards but now neither the linux box nor my mac recognize it :(

any ideas?
