Question Loss of keyboard and mouse control

I am running on a HP Pavilion, specifics of which I am not sure. My rig is as follows:
Windows ME
AMD Athlon 1ghz
512mb ram
Radeon 8500 64mb(Newest Catalyst drivers)
My problem is that my mouse often times locks up, in strange situations. It used to happen more often, for no apparent reason, the mouse and keyboard would just give out and I would have to unplug the mouse, reset and then plug in the mouse and boot back up, but after reformatting things were fine again. It's been a few months since that has happened quite like that, but I do notice some things while just running in windows. For instance, after shutting out of Outlook, the computer hangs for a few moments. Also, it takes sometimes 2 minutes for the "Open with" menu to open up(Always has happened). Lately however, I have been experiencing very similar problems as before, while playing the game EverQuest. The computer begins to hang, then it comes back, and the chat window has scrolled way up(The function in EQ is based on the mouse scroll button). This happens several times, and then the mouse and keyboard just give out, no control, but the computer continues to run. I also used to have a very similar problem in other 3d games, such as Return to Castle Wolfenstein, and sometimes Half-Life, but this hasn't been an issue since I got a new graphics card. I think perhaps the problem is actually related to the mouse, though I don't see why this would then effect the keyboard.

I have latest drivers for the card, DX 8.1, etc. I have played EverQuest on this same computer before, with no problems.

Thanks in advance.

How much RAM do you have? Have you run an up-to-date virus scan? Have you scanned your computer for spyware?

For greater overall system performance, I highly recommend reading over the following articles.
