I have win2k running as my desktop computer's OS, and i have win98 running as my laptop's. I want them to link. I know that both nic cards work, and so does the cable. Yet, win2k shows that the network cable is unplugged, and on the laptop, it's dongle doesn't show any link.....can someone please tell me what i'm doing wrong here!?! Thanks!

Just found this post (unanswered) in the networking forum which sheds a little extra light.

i am networking a win2k computer to a win98 computer, the win2k computer recognizes that the link is there, and it's link is on. the laptop doesn't recognize this, and it's link isn't on. any help would be appreciated.

let me see.. I have no experience on this but..
Do you have print and file sharing enabled in the WIN98 comptuer?

yes, the file and print sharing is turned on. both computers have it turned on. I have static ips set for both, with the correct subnets. I just don't know why i can't get them to display the link.

Try this:
On network neighborhood right click and choose properties make sure the access control is set correctly (i have never networked before but it's worth a shot)

Hi Gaylan. You haven't said HOW you are connecting these machines.
2xNIC & Crossover cable, Direct Parallel/Serial Cable, Through Hub/Switch/Router etc?

From what you have said, if you go into Network Places on the W2k desktop, you can see the W2k shares. If you go to Network neighbourhood on the W98 laptop, do you see any shares?

Just going to boot up W2k...

What IPs and subnet are you using ? DHCP or static ?

Can you ping each machine ?

ie. ping 192.168.0.1
ping 192.168.0.2

What protocols are you using ? TCP/IP ? NetBEUI ? Make sure NetBEUI is installed on the win98 machine.

I have just merged the topic with your original question in networking forum which makes some of our subsequent questions look a little redundant :)
Leaving it in Networking forum - think it's better suited here.

I had netbeui installed on both machines. The win2k machine has 2 nics, and one of them is hooked up to the broadband ethernet. the other, i was hoping, to have as my LAN connection, straight to my laptop, via a crossover. both cables work, all 3 nics work, and i have tried all the protocols that win2k will let me install. none of them worked. I used an internal IP address of 10.10.2.1 for the win2k machine, and 10.10.2.2 for the win98 laptop. both had the typical default class A subnet of 255.0.0.0 . I have searched exhaustively online, and via my computer teachers/friends and none of them can help. I even went to my school's network admin (turns out he only uses Novell, *censored swearing* keeps me locked out of just about everything too ;) even this site.) anywho, that's pretty much the full situation. danke! (oh, and it's win2k Pro, not server.)

Danke,

Gaylan

My Cisco teacher informed me today that i was using the wrong cable. I am now fine with my computer. *thwacks his head again*
