I have a system with two HDD. C: drive is rather full but sadly I cannot free up any more space. When installing some programs the installation falls over as there is not enogh room in the temp directroy for unzipping and temp files.
Is it possible to change a setting somewhere to make a directory on the D: drive the temp directory for windows.

why not just empty your temp directory ?
the folder "C:\WINDOWS\TEMP" is used by windows when it installs programs. after the instalation is complete , the files left over are useless. i delete EVERYTHING in mine on a weekly basis.
other files that can be safely deleted from your system to make more room are ...
.tmp , .temp , .bak , .old , .chk

It is empty. The C: hard drive is relatively small (540MB). I thought there might me a simple way to set the temp directory to the other drive.

Hi there. While the above advice is very sound (i.e. you can probably free up an awful lot of space on your C drive if you tried), it is possible to change the temp path in Win95 as follows:
Start>Run>
type sysedit and click OK.
Select AUTOEXEC.BAT
Add two new lines, or modify the existing lines if they are already there, as follows:
SET TEMP=[directory]
SET TMP=[directory]
e.g. SET TEMP=D:\TEMP
Save AUTOEXEC.BAT, create the D:\TEMP directory as entered above and reboot

If you're saving all this good info to that small drive, you may be looking for a larger one sooner than you think. :D
