ip addresses changed after new laptop
Hi folks,
i'm still having problem with home network. i've tried all the suggestions. including patches regfix, winsockxpfix, and letest updates. it started out with ip addresses changing. then i got a yellow triangle with ! i applied all the patches, no luck. here's the scenario: ibm think pad has a wireless lan which i disabled. they're connected via a cross over cable. the desktop intel p4 asus mobo and has: marvel yukon 88e 8001/8003/8010I on the mobo when i click property it has: client for ms networks file and printer sharing QoS packet scheduler TCP/IP (with DHCP enabled and automatic IP and DNS) the lap top ibm think pad has: wireless 11a/b/g mini pci adapter 1394 net adapter intel pro/1000 MT Mobile connection xircom realport2 ethernet 1/100 (i added this one) when i click properties it has: client for ms networks service advertising protocol file and printer sharing QoS packet scheduler NWLink netBIOS NWLink IPX/SPX/netBIOS compatible protocol TCP/IP (with DHCP enabled and automatic IP and DSN) i have tried just about everything. updates, patches, reboot, and all. any suggestions on what i can do next to get these 2 pc's to talk? the network icon shows the ntework is connected, but both send packets, but not receive any. the ip address with ipconfig on the desktop is: 169.254.146.59 255.255.0.0 and for the laptop: 169.254.83.48 255.255.0.0 thanks! |

Do either of them have more than one network enabled? Can you post the full ipconfig for both machines?
Exactly what are you trying to get working (file sharing, internet connection sharing, PC to PC gaming,...) ?

xp networking laptop to desktop peoblem
the laptop has a wireless network card, and a 1389 network connection. i have disabled all but the intel network card. the desktop has one network card marvel yukon 10/100 card. i just want to be able to shar files, and print and use internet connection sharing. after disabling the 2 nic cards on the laptop, the ip address on the desk top:
192.168.0.1 255.255.0.0 and on the laptop 192.168.0.49 255.255.0.0 192.168.0.1 default gateway (which is the desktop). the ipconfig on the lap top seems staying constant. but the desktop keeps changing. when i set to "automatically assign ip" it puts a random number. right now it is 159.254.146.59 / 255.255.0.0 i don't understand wht the problem is. i need help. |

You want to share the internet connection through the laptop? If so enable both NICs. connect to the internet. (BTW - how do you connect to the internet?) On the connection that goes to the internet enable ICS (advanced tab of the network connections properties).
Then make sure that the desktop is set to acquire its IP address automatically. Connect the desktop to the laptop and see if it gets internet access.

Also make sure you are using a CROSSOVER cable if you are connecting them directly to each other.

laptop to desktop lan connection not working
thans so much guys.
i'm using a cross over cable to connect the two. the desk top used to work fine with another laptop. when i changed the laptop, things went wacco. i really appreciate everybody's help. anyway, here's the latest: i put a xircom pcmcia lan card into lap top and disabled all other lan stuff. the lap top has there setting: ip addy is static not auto: 192.168.0.2 which is a good signe 255.255.255.0 gateway: 192.168.0.1 the laptop can see itself and all the folders in network places and the c: drive shows that it is shared. it can ping itself and the desktop. seems doing ok. if it can just see the desk top under work group. the desktop can ping itself and ping the laptop and send and receive packets. it has ipconfig of: 192.168.0.1 255.255.255.0 it says the network is connected, but nothing under workgroup. and when i click sharing, it says network is not present or "server services not started". so, i'm beginning to suspect some tweaks that were done. i have a suspicion that a few days ago, about the same time that i changed the laptop, i saw an article in tech republic that said you can disable some services to speed up win-xp. i'm going to go over the list of services and see what has been disabled. i tried the netsh command thanks to you guys, and it seemed that it helped things a bit. i will post the ipconfig /all listings tonight and keep you guys posted. thanks again. |

Do you have any firewalls running? If you do try disabling it, then disconnect the crossover cable for a little while and connect it back up.
Try adding a new network place and browsing the network that way. I had similar probs recently and I think it was to do with my Sygate firewall. |

i found the problem. it had something to do with tech republic reccomendations to disable tcp/ip netbios helper and server service, to "speed things up" in xp-prof. i enabled them and bingo, things started working like a charm. all ip addresses seemed ok and the machines started talking. thanks for all you guys did.
merry christmas to all of you guys. |
