i have two computers one upstairs and one downstairs. the upstairs one works fine. the downstairs computer continues to have connectivity problems.
I just installed a d-link dfe-530tx+ on my emachines 733i running windows ME.
the upstairs (dell) downstairs computer (e machines) both plug into a d-link ddi-604 router into lan ports 1 & 2 respectively. from there the router goes to a motorola surfboard modem (for comcast high speed internet). the down stairs wiring was verified with another computer (my work laptop) and worked fine. The cat 5 patch cord plugs in to the d-link network card and has 1 solid light and one blinking light. I have tried the following after installing the right drivers and verifying that they were installed correctly by looking at control panel/system/hardware devices/network adapters
1) allowing the ip address to be configured automatically (i usually get an ip address beginning with 169.254.x.x)
2) setting a static ip address of 192.168.0.102

i talked to a tech support guy at d-link and he told me to download the winsock fix and if that did not work then i would need a new network card. I downloaded and installed the fix and that did nothing.
I than went and got a new card. same results after installing the second card.
The microsoft web site says that the network card is compatible with windows ME.
I can ping the ip address assigned to othe computer itself but get a request timed out for an attempt to ping the routers ip address

any thoughts or suggestions????

Lets see if I understand....

Two PCs wired to a dlink router. One connection works the other doesn't.
The connection used by the PC that is not working is GOOD because it works with another PC.

Now it gets a little muddy... ;)

The PC that doesn't work can't get a dynamic IP address

With a static IP address, the PC that doesn't work can ping the other PC, but NOT the ROUTER

Tried two NICs both yield the same results...

Is this correct so far? Now time the questions segment of our program.;)

Does the non-functioning PC have a firewall installed? Does the dlink have MAC filtering enabled? Have you configured the firewall on the router?

Does the PC that works get its IP dynamically?

When you set the static IP, what do you set as the default gateway and subnet mask?

yes all is correct except for the fact that the non working pc can ping itself but nothing else (not the other working PC not the router)

non working PC
OS : windows ME
Network Adapter : D-link dfe-530TX+
Static
IP address: 192.168.0.100
Default gateway: 192.168.0.1 (from router setup)
subnet mask: 255.255.255.0

DHCP attempt ( when i let the ip address get set automatically)
ip address: 169:254.1.98

there is no firewall installed on the non working PC. I do have mcaffe security center but no firewall set up

working PC
OS: XP media center edition
Network adapter :Intel(R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection
IP address is automatic

I tried spacing these out in my reply but the post just pushes them togther (there are 5 headers Action,Name,Source,Destination,Protocol for example the name allow to ping wan port from source:wan,* to source : wan with the following protocol: icmp,8)
rules from firewall section of d-link -604 router
Action Name Source Destination Protocol
Allow Allow to Ping WAN port WAN,* WAN ICMP,8
Deny Default *,* LAN,* *,*
Allow Default LAN,* *,* *,*

the router does not have MAC filtering enabled (only IP FILTERS radio button is checked the mac filters button is not checked)

Also tried leaving the connections to the cable modem and router (both power and rj-45 and coaxial cable )unplugged overnight and plugged them back in this morning only to yield same results (a desperate attempt)

still confused ???? any more suggestions

Verify the D-link dfe-530TX+ is installed properly.

Go into Device manager, from Start > Settings > Control Panel > double click System Icon.

Click the Device Manager tab.

The D-link dfe-530TX+ should be listed with the proper model number under Network Adapters.

My D-link dfe-530TX+ got installed with a Reltec adapter the first time I installed it in WinMe and caused problems, instead of installing the D-link dfe-530TX PCI adapter.

yes it is listed with the proper model number under network adapters
i actually went to d-link and got the windows ME drivers and installed them

also in my router set up http://192.168.0.1

the MAC address of the non working computer shows up under

Dynamic DHCP Client list
Host Name IP Address MAC Address Expired Time
gxfkw81 192.168.0.101 00-13-20-94-86-B0 Dec/25/2005 08:47:10 (working)
192.168.0.100 00-13-46-69-DC-E3 Dec/25/2005 08:44:59 (not)

but when trying to ping the not working computer i get a request timed out error

Check this.

Open the Control Panel

Click Network Connections > Local Area Network > Properties scroll down to Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

Highlight it and click Properties

On the General tab make sure both fields are set to Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically is ticked.

Then click on the Alternate Configuration tap and make sure Automatic private IP address is ticked.

Ok your way out and Close.

Reboot

If that don't work can you hook the Win Me pc straight to the modem and connect to the internet that way as a test?
