Connected to the Internet but It Does Not Work

Hey Everyone,
How's it going? I am currently on my second computer right now to type this message because my primary computer cannot access the Internet. I recently moved my primary computer from a location with DSL connection to my current location which has a 56k connection via SBC Global dial-up. For some reason, I can connect to the Internet (it dials through fine and I can login, and even my phone line appears to be used), but I cannot actually use the connection.

I originally thought it was a problem with my modem, but I am using this modem at the moment with my second computer, and it works fine. Everything else is the same, so it must have something to do with the software setup in my computer. Please help.

What operating system?
