Hi everyone,

I am not having much luck with a document so hopefully someone can help me out with this problem!

I have a Word document containing numerous links ({INCLUDETEXT....}) to other Word documents, and I want the links to update automatically each time this document is opened. When I go to the Edit menu and select Links the area of the dialogue headed "Update method for selected link" has only the one item 'Locked' in dark print. I want to tick 'Automatic update' but it will not let me. ( I am using Word 2003 SP1)

Can anyone help and suggest what I have done to disable this option?

Thanks very much and best wishes to all for Christmas, Roger

Is the document protected? Were any of the linked documents deleted or moved to a different folder? This would break links.

Graham Mayor has a macro for updating fields when you open a document:

Another option: Create a source document that stores all INCLUDETEXT information. When you need to update the information, you simply update the source file and every other file is automatically updated.

Hi Cheryl,

Thanks for your reply. No, the document is not protected at all, though down the track it probably will be as it will be part of a Quality System. All the lionks are still intact, the documents all being retained in their original locations!

Thanks for sending the macro created by Graham Mayor, I will have a look and I will probably be able to use it!

I am sorry the last suggestion needs a bit more thought, I cannot immediately understand what you are suggesting but will sit and think for a while!:D

Thanks again and best wishes for Christmas and the New Year! Roger
