I have been unable to get my fax modem to work. It has worked previously and then it stopped. When I query the modem it checks out fine. Device manager indicates not problem. But the fax software (Windows XP) is unable to initialize the fax modem.

I appreciate any help. I am hoping to avoid having to reinstall the operating system.

If the complete error message is: "Windows cannot initialize the device driver for this hardware. (Code 37)," Microsoft recommends you uninstall and reinstall the modem drivers.

To do that:
1. Click Start, click Run, and in the Open box, type control panel.
2. In Control Panel, double-click System, click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.
3. Double-click Modems to see the devices in that category.
4. Right click on the modem listed, left click on Remove.
5. When you reboot, XP should detect and reinstall the modem.

Thank you for the advice. I will give that a try. It will probably be next week before I can let you know if it works because I'm going out of town for the holidays.

I hope you have a pleasant holiday.

I did as you suggested. I am getting the following message when I try to configure the modem:
"Phone And Modem control panel can not be opened. You may have a problem starting telephony service." When I try to open Phone and Modem... in Control Panel I get the same message as above.
What can I do?
