For those of you who remember the old ScreenSavers show, it was used in one of their Ultimate Gaming Machine builds, which I was trying to duplicate. Seemed to work out fine, but not sure I would know otherwise without a complete failure, which never happened.
I have been a devotee of Crucial memory for many years without any apparent problems. I have heard good things about Kingston, Corsair and OCZ, but have no experience with them.
Would appreciate any thoughts.

Thanks.

My Norton antivirus software alerted me to a high risk virus called W32.Netsky.gen at mm <--- (at = @). I removed it. However, a day later it alerted me again, and I removed it once more. I have researched the virus and it is high risk, a big security risk, and seemingly difficult to remove. I have ran a scan, and despite two removals, it is still being detected. Also, I remember one night last week, a black window opened, a friend informed me it is BIOS, then it closed itself within seconds. Norton alerted me to this virus within a day or two of that happening, so I'm correlating the two.

Some information derived from Norton: Affected Area, 1 file, 2 processes, 1 Browser cache
Details, c:\windows\svccwroot.exe

Please can somebody inspect my Hijack This log, and advise me.

Thank you in advance.

This problem started for me a few days ago out of the blue. I hadn't recently installed any new programs or drivers. It began with just the screen freezing for a second and then returning to normal with the error message "Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered." I was running an EVGA NVIDIA 8800GTS 640MB card at the time. Nothing on the computer is overclocked nor has it been. Then the next day the error started to happen more frequently so I upgraded the drivers to the most recent release 191.07 WHQL. After this I started to see a lot of screen artifacts and began to run some diagnostic tools like FurMark, each time I tried to run this it would eventually freeze up the OS, resulting in either a BSOD with nvlddmkm.sys (0x00000116) to blame or just freeze up the screen and never come back until a system reboot. All of the temperatures were always within operating ranges. I tried cleaning out the drivers and installing various releases, as well as pretty much every posted solution I could find, but nothing helped. Attached are some of the pictures of the artifacts I was seeing. I decided to contact EVGA who told me to RMA the card as it was under warranty. Since there were graphic problems in the BIOS they thought it had to be the card malfunctioning and not the drivers, etc.

I thought all would be well and good from here, So i popped in the only spare graphics card I have which is a BFG NVIDIA 6200OC PCI. Unfortunately the problem continued to some degree. I no longer have the graphic artifacts, but I am still getting the "Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered." error whenever I try to do anything even minimally graphics intensive, for example looking though the pictures I posted at a fast pace, or even run the Windows Vista performance rating diagnostic. I decided to go ahead and do a fresh install of Vista, and even with that I am still getting the error message. Note that the OS was current with all updates in both cases.

I was hoping it was simply a defective graphics card, but even with a new card and a clean install of the OS, I am still getting the error message. All of the images are from when the 8800GTS was installed. I have done all the basic stuff like checking the HDD, RAM, virus scan, etc. Does anyone have any thoughts as to what could be causing this problem? Please let me know if any other information might be helpful.

Hello from a newbie who is posting on behalf of her husband who seems to have killed his Acer laptop computer.

He has been using Easeus Partition Master to try to resize his partitions. Easeus kept displaying messages that there were errors on the drive he was trying to resize, but he was unable to find any errors by running the XP system tools. He continued trying to resize.

Last night when he switched on, the computer only went as far as the Windows XP loading screen. The green bar showed for a few seconds, and then an Easeus message popped up very briefly up saying "The batch operations are processed completely." That message then vanished, leaving just a blank black screen. We have tried several times to switch on and off, but always with the same result.

I have changed the BIOS to boot from the CD, and we have tried using the Acer recovery disks, booting from an original XP disk and Windows 98, without success.

I have read about making a floppy disk to boot from, but the laptop doesn't have a floppy slot.

Please can anybody help?

Hello all. First off I'd like to say thank you to anyone who can offer some recommendations or advise with my computer. I'm a network technician who knows just the basics with everything else IT related so I'm really at a loss here. I actually bought another laptop because I got so frustrated with my old laptop but I'd like to give it another shot with your help and expertise.

In my old computer, I have an outdated version of AVG the free edition and I can't get rid of "Virus found Exploit" hiding in path \Temperory Internet Files\Content.IE5\44GWCQZ\Ms07004[1].htm

I am unable to open up anything located in the control panel. I get a Restrictions message that says "This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator". Obviously, I am the administrator and did not have any problems until I let down my guard by staying connected to the network while upgrading my anti-virus software.

My computer runs XP. I haven't connected to the internet on it for over a year and I figured I'd wait to get some feedback before I connected.

What information is needed to help figure out what actions I can take? Or if it should continue to be a giant paper weight.

Thank you.

My laptop will boot up fine and everything, but the CPU fan will not spin anymore. I took it apart and determined that the fan itself is fine (I tried it on the 3-pin connector for my video card fan and it worked) but the CPU fan connector on the motherboard is what is faulty. It is a flat 3-pin connector for a standard 3-wire (red, black, yellow) laptop fan. I don't want to completely replace the motherboard because that is pricey and unfeasible. I was curious if anyone knows a way to repair this particular component or a possible workaround for it. Any and all input appreciated.

Trying to help a co-worker with her laptop, and I'm stumped. Here are the specs:
Computer: Toshiba Satellite Laptop
OS: Windows XP Media Center Edition, SP3
Memory : .99GB
Processor: Intel Centrino Duo 1.6GHz
Browsers used: Internet Explorer 8 and Firefox 3.5.5
Internet Connection: Broadband (all my other computers work fine)
All windows updates are current through 11/10/09

The computer displayed a message that the hard drive was getting full, so she cleaned off some items; she got this message again a little later. I checked it for spyware with malwarebytes antimalware and superantispyware, and the programs deleted craploads of spyware (several trojans). Computer ran faster, but internet was very slow. Checked the c:\windows\temp directory, and the longer IE was open, the more files filled up the temp directory. These were large files of about 9MB each. Installed firefox, figuring it was just an IE issue, but had same problem. Ran cc cleaner in Safe mode, re-ran antispyware tools, and restarted. Both IE8 and firefox are still installing large temp files any time they are open. Installed winsockxpfix, reinstalled internet explorer 8, and coworker has reinstalled video drivers. I found yet another tool from Trend Micro's site (free) and while it found several errors while it ran in safe mode, (which it said it would fix), upon restart, I am having the same problem. This problem is persistent. What can I do?
