Hello,

For the past 3 or 4 months been getting constant random disconnections resulting in "Dns server isn't responding" Contacted isp followed instructions performed an isolation test. Modem seems to be disconnecting and reconnecting at random times.

I replaced all including modem, phone jacks, filters and also check if any broken or loose wiring.

Also every time I turn the TV on it seems to interfere with the connection resulting in extremely slow or disconnection.
The cost of sending a technician is too high for me $300+ if the connection isn't the Isp fault at which they said everything is fine from there end.

I have a spare laptop that I keep and store very important documents on. It is password protected and has a separate guest access.

Here is my question, my daughters laptop is in the shop for repairs and so she uses my spare laptop while at home and uses the guest connections.

She is going on a graduation trip and wants to use my spare laptop between her and 3 other friends. I have no problem with that. However, I was looking at it today and as a guest the icon that allows you the option to select available wireless connections such as at a hotel is not there. When I go into network and sharing center it also does not allow changes as a guest.

Does this also happen away from home network? Is there anyway to allow a guest user to select available wireless connections while away from default home connection?

I know the simple solution would be just to give her the password on the laptop. I do trust her with everything just not sure about others with her.

Thanks

My son has a desktop on Win7 where I intend to connect the printer, my wife has a laptop on Win7, and I have a laptop on XP. We have an AT&T wireless router/modem. Do I need to make a home network? I am kind of partial towards having a home network because I am worried that if one gets a virus, then it might affect the others.

I am using a wireless network via cable broad band and an Asus RT-N56U router (which, by the way, is a fantastic router)

I have ordered an Acer netbook. This computer fits the netbook category because of size (11.6") and weight and lack of an optical drive but is not bare bones. It has a dual core processor, Win 7 HP 64, 500 GB HD, 3 USB's and HDMI. I will probably want to network the netbook with my desk computer to install programs. I currently have a workgroup set up on the desk computer with the location set to 'work' that I have not really used much. Both computers will be Win 7 HP 64 bit.

Microsoft touts the ease of setting up a homegroup but is a work group better suited to use the optical drive on the desk computer from the netbook to install programs? Are there other good options for this other than buying an external optical drive? For example, is it possible (and practical) to copy a disk image of an installation disk to an external hard drive (which I have) and install from that HD?

Good morning! Last week we moved our desktop from one room upstairs to another. Unfortunately, the cable jack in that room had been previously disconnected (for whatever reason) by our cable company, so I had to call them to come reconnect it in order to have service there. The tech did just that -- except that now my cable modem works fine, but my wireless router does not. When both are connected to my computer and turned on, I cannot get Internet access on my desktop and my wireless signal is broadcast and I can connect to the wireless network, but there is no Internet access. If we bypass the wireless router, I can connect to the Internet through my cable modem fine.

So what do you think happened here? Did we (or the tech) accidentally switch some cables around? Did our wireless router just happen to "break" during the move? It powers up just fine and does indeed broadcast a wireless signal, which makes me think that some sort of settings might need to be adjusted for some reason.

My desktop is a Dell, my cable modem is an RCA, and my wireless router is a Belkin. I'm running Windows 7 Professional. Any help you can provide is much appreciated. Thanks!

So my laptop is fairly new - I got it in October. It's generally been fine but these last few weeks something weird has been happening to it's internet connection. I initially thought it was the router, as other devices were slow (although they didn't cut out), but I'm now back at uni and it's still acting up.

Basically most of the time it's fine. Once every few minutes, however, the internet just seems to stop. I get DNS errors and 'connection aborted - unknown error' from Chrome: trying some other browsers in the downtime and they don't connect either, so it's not a browser issue. Some processes seem to continue, however - downloads continue just very slowly (around 4kbps).

I've tried disabling various shields on my Avast antivirus to see if it's a firewall problem, and I've run virus scans to see if it's malware. Neither helped. So I'm assuming this is a hardware issue. Any ideas for checks I can perform?

I am having issues with my linksys wrt54g2 v1 router. about two weeks ago i noticed my SSID wasnt showing up and i was having network issues with my netbook. my wired xbox and everyone elses wireless devices were fine. I cycled the power on my modem and router and found
my internet had to be re-established (time warner had an error and they swore the modem i was using for the last year was new, but it wasnt. so they updated my serial and mac of my modem)

since then, my wireless will not work. If i reboot and set up my secuirty (as standard, i have a config saved, but also have done it manually several times since) my net will stay on the wireless for an hour or up to a day then nothing can connect save for my xbox (which is connected to the router)

My roomates are getting to stressful levels on me, I have no clue how to fix it.

I updated firmware
changed channels (this made it work for two days)
mac cloned my ip using my direct connected netbook (lasted 24 hours)
I cant figure it out, and fear i may need a new router. I'm hoping this isnt the case, because i am so strapped for cash.

Anyone have any solutions? I have spent god close to 40 hours online researching this, but no hard answer. Some say its the router crapped and cant hold the signal. Others say its firmware.

I'm on time warner, i just plug and go, set up my security and manual port forwarding and it worked. Ten devices fine, for the last year.

Hope im in the right place here!
