Hi Scott,

In order for us to help you you will need to provide us with some more information than that http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif

Such as your system specs.

ie. CPU type and speed, the amount of RAM etc.

Also any errors you've encountered whilst trying to install windows.

The more you can give us the more we can help you http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif

Scott February 8th, 2001 08:42 PM

Don't know the type. 350mhz 512 ram
The error I get says "This file is not understood by the operating system" when ever I try and run the installer.

"Run the installer"...are you trying to re-instal Windows 98, or install over another OS?

What exactly do you want to do?

Buzz February 9th, 2001 03:28 AM

Opps I must be in the wrong forum.

I'm just trying to install windows 98. I don't have any version of windows installed at the moment. I'm on a friends computer (they were no help!) I'ven asked everyone I know and they either could not help or didn't seem to want to help me. Microsoft basically tells me "We can't help you" I'm lost. I just wanted to get windows loaded on my computer.

Scott, have you been able to format the hard drive? That's the first step. If you can't then we need to start there.

You also may need to "fdisk" the hard drive. This may be needed even if you haven't formated it.

The hard drive must be formatable. And it must be set to "active" by using fdisk. Let us know.

Format? No I just want to install.
I looked through everything that came with my computer but I can't seem to find anything labeled F Disk.

Geordie No 1 February 9th, 2001 09:26 PM

You will need a Windows 98 start up disk in order to use fdisk, plus any other relevant files needed to prepare a hard drive for W98.

Don`t try and go any furthur until you have obtained a copy. When you do, try scandisk first, though the best help on this subject would come from the Microsux website under "How to install w98" or something.

Junky February 9th, 2001 10:44 PM

"fdisk" is a DOS command that must be ran from the DOS prompt. It is on the win98 startup floppy disk.

Whether you want to format or not, it may be necessary to get everything in order to be able to install windows.

If you have never done anything like this, or feel uncomfortable doing this, I suggest you find someone in your local area to do this for you.

I`ll do it for a pint of lager!

Scott February 10th, 2001 12:11 AM

I feel fine doing it I just don't understand the process. I've been a surgeon for 15 years I think I can handle this.

My computer doesn't even have a disk drive in it. All I have is a zip drive and a cd drive. It didn't come with any disks. It's a brand new machine.

I still can't find any disk titled F Disk.
I'll look the the ones called Scan Disk and Startup Disk.
I assume if I find a CD with the same titles that will be okay.

Thanks Guys! I'll let you know if I find them.

Fdisk is not a shiny plastic disk. Neither is scandisk. Quit looking for them http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif

Listen carefully to Junky and Geordie No1. They'll talk you through it as slick as you please!
