Tapisrv has caused and error in WAN.TSP

I recenlty had a run in with spyware..so I was told by my ISP. Anyhow, they instructed me to download Ad-aware or Spybot to to help remove some of the bad stuff. I did this and all looked okay..unitl I deleted those file that the software claimed was a threat. I re-started my PC tried to access the interneti get this error: "TAPISRV" this program has caused an error in and you can close or ignore the problem and try restrarting your computer. Well you can not "Ignore" it because it will not allow you to do so, you must close the error message. Once I close it, I get this message: "Tapisrv has caused and error in wan.tsp" and it says after this "Tapisrv will now close". And I can not get onto the internet because this error keeps coming up when I try to connect. I have spoken with Verizon (my isp), Dell, and Microsoft and everyone has to look into this further and get back to me. In the meantime I am banging my head against the was because this is going on for days and all the attempts at fixes has not worked yet. Please help if you can. I am running Windows ME and connecting with a DSL connection.

Hi shell506, Welcome to CTH!
I don't know what all you've tried, so try this:

Open Spybot and click 'Recovery'. Restore all items listed.
Open Ad-Aware and click 'Open quarantine list'. Restore everything.

Reboot and try to go online. If successful, Download 'Hijack This!'. Unzip, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".
When the scan is finished, click "Save Log", and copy and paste it in a reply.

got a problem with restoring ....tb525, help!

Hey Tb525, thanks for responding. My problem is that I DELETED everything that I had quarantined in ad-aware and I never got to really run spybot because that is when I started getting this error. So I am accessing the internet on my sister's PC because I can not get online on mine. Some people told me that I might have to rename and reinstall the "telephon" files in order to recover anything that I might have deleted. The only thing is I see instructions on how to do this for every operating system but Windows ME. I dunno...I'm stuck!

Try running LSPFix from here: (It's small enough to fit on a floppy)
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm

Thanks tb525...I will try this and see if this helps. I sounds like it could do the trick being Ad-adware did get rid of new.net and webhancer on my pc. I'll keep you updated thanks so much for your help.

You can also try this fix from Lavasoft:
http://digital-solutions.co.uk/lavasoft/whndnfix.zip
Just unzip and run..

I tried the LSPFix and it did remove newdot.net from the LSP list but it still did not fix the error that I am getting with the TAPISRV files. I will try this new link that you suggested and hope that it works. I was also told by a friend to rename all the TAPISRV and telephony files to a .OLD extension and then extract the files from the cab files in my windows folder to "rebuild" the files to what they used to be. We'll see! Shell506

still no go!

TBT525, I've tried everything that you have suggested, as well as, rebuilding old files, replacing them with new ones (a techy friend told me to try). Nothing is working. I am still getting that error when it tries to dial and connect to the internet. I am so frustrated because nothing I try seems to work. Could it be a problem with my dial up networking or modem? Is there a way that maybe I can re-install something there maybe??

Error in wan.tsp cuased by tapisrv

Shell:
I've just fixed the same error you are reporting. I'dont know how the error started (Someone at home did something),because the PC (IBM Netvista) and its configuration was in use for years. I fixed it empirically. I did a lot of things, several of those are the same you are tried, without results. By the way, I'm using WinPoet as ASDL dialer. What I guess did the trick was removing the NIC (Ethernet card), deleting Dialed Connection to the ISP, removing PPOE and TCP/IP Protocol, deleting WinPoet software, rebooting. After that you have to bind again the TCP/IP to your NIC, which was detected an autoinstalled at reboot, re-installed WinPoet and defined my user and password on the WinPoet window again.
All those stuff, cnnot take you more than 30 minutes.
Good luck,
Andrés:fyi:
