Internet Connection keeps disconnecting

Hi Guys

I am having a problem with my internet connection. It keeps disconnecting and trying to reconnect. Sometimes it will reconnect automatically after 60 seconds or if I on the redial button. Otherwise I have to connect again manually. I do not know why it is doing this. Apart from that it always reconnects without me having to reboot the pc. I do not know why it keeps dropping connection.

I previously (a couple of days ago) had my HJT log checked and fixed and everything is fine. This problem was happening before I repaired pc using os disc and then it stopped. I have since downloaded Spyware Blaster and the new version of HJT 1.99 nothing else and the problem started up again. I do not know if anything is conflicting. I am with BTOpenworld (Broadband 1.1 mbs). Also all virus definitions are up to date. I have already run CWShredder, Spybot and Adaware trying to resolve this issue but nothing.

Can you guys help please? I attach a fresh HJT log below just in case you ask me to.

Hi Sherry, you have a clean log. This is not a malware/spyware issue so I'm transferring your topic to the Internet Forum.

I see that you have installed SP2. If you have not already installed this update, do so. It may fix your problem.

Sherobin January 11th, 2005 10:35 PM

Hi Annmarie

Thanks for the response.

I went to the update that you mentioned above but the message reads:

On a computer that is running Microsoft Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (SP2), programs that connect to IP addresses that are in the loopback address range may not work as you expect. For example, you may receive an error message that says that you cannot establish a connection.

My PC does nto say that I cannot establish a connection it just keeps on disconnecting and tries to connect again automatically. Sometimes it does and sometimes I have to click on Start --- Connect to ---- BTOpenworld and it connects up again. This happens constantly about every 5 mins or 10 mins but too frequently for it be a complete problem.

I therefore never downloaded the patch. I must say though that I rang up my IS provider and they said that my drivers needed updating. I did what they said but the pc kept disconnecting about every 30 seconds which was worse than before. I therefore restored my pc back to before I downloaded the drivers they gave me and now it is back to the above state of play.

This is making me tear out my hair amongst other things. Any more suggestions please. Desperate plea!! I have to type quick before I get disconnected.:( :(

Try the update anyway Sherry, the information you have quoted is just an example of what could be happening.

misterbadnback January 12th, 2005 12:40 AM

To configure yourself
Ok You will have to do this by hand.
Open your control panel>then open Network Connections>Click on the support tab>then click on details.
Write down all the ifo on the page.
Physical address,ip address, subnet mask, default gateway, and the DNS Servers, The Wins Server if there are any listed.
BE SURE TO WRITE THEM CORRECTLY WITH THE SLASHES BETWEEN THE NUMBERS OR THE DOTS BETWEEN THE NUMBERS.
Then click close
Then click on the general tab>then click properties>Then click on Internet Protocol(tcp/ip) once to highlite it. Then click on properties.
When the window opens put a tick (or click use the following ip address) Then put the info in the spaces provided.
Next click use following DNS server addresses on bottom of page and enter that info be sure to use the same order in which you copied them.
Then click ok then ok again then close all the windows and that should keep you connected.

Hi Annmare

I installed the update and so far I have not dropped connection. It looks as though everything is fine.

My other problem is that my CPU is running at between 58-100% and no matter what I cant get it down. I thought I would continue this thread as if I post elsewhere I am going to be asked to do another HJT log (this is already in this thread) or run this ad-aware or that spybot etc etc. So to save time I thought it would be easier to continue here if that is ok. Can u please help me get this back down to 0% (my pc at work is on 0% 99% of the time) the highest I have seen it is 7%.

Help please....:(

AnnMarie January 13th, 2005 11:14 PM

Sherry, go here and make sure that all your Services are setup according to the Safe configuration on that page.

If you still have a problem, please post a new topic in the XP forum. Mention your log has been checked, you have no malware or spyware on your PC and you have configured your services according to Black Vipers recommendations.

AnnMarie

I went to the site you asked me to. To be honest it is way over the top of my head. I am none the wiser as to what I am supposed to be doing. It is like words jumping up and down on the page, means nothing and cannot make any sense out of what he is saying. I just want somebody to tell me word for word how to stop my CPU from running so high and slowing down my pc..

Thanks in anticpation once more

The Black Viper page Ann Marie linked to is a guide for turning off XP services that most users don't need to have running.

First, go to Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Services. Those are the services the Black Viper page refers to.

Compare the services list on your computer to what Black Viper's guide says it should be set to in the "Safe" column in the grid. (You may have some services not on his list so don't worry about those)

When you find one that should be disabled according to the grid but is marked Manual or Automatic on your list, double click it, choose Disabled from the drop-down list, click the Stop button (if the service is not running, that button won't be active so don't worry about it) to stop the service without having to reboot.

Continue down the list. It can be a little tedious but it's well worth it in terms of better system performance and online security.

AnnMarie January 15th, 2005 11:45 PM

Just dont disable System Restore, leave it enabled.

Internet connectivity and Win XP 2

I am also facing this problem. The internet connection drops during evening time. It works fine during morning time. I've no idea as to what is happening.

I installed the above mentioned patch and still it drops for 1 minute or so and then connects back.

Is there any other update which is required to be installed and if so what is it?

This is happening for the last 2 weeks and I tried each and every thing right from replacing the power adapter, distribution box etc etc.

My last effort will be to uninstall Windows XP SP 2. But all my patches which I installed previously will not be installed.

Can anybody tell me from where I can install the individual patches after the uninstallation of Windows XP SP 2. I think I've to run windows update.

Please help with a solution.
