My Computer is Completely Inoperable
Hi everyone, a couple of months ago a website I own got hacked and when I was checking it, I stupidly allowed a self-replicating virus to embed itself on my computer. Could not get rid of it. The file is my name: "first.last.exe".
I paid a guy $150 to tell me I needed to reformat my hard drive. He was able to eliminate all start-up programs and get my data off though onto a storage drive which was cool. Prior to him, I posted my HJT log on another forum site I have used over the years and got no response. My computer was basically working for a while, but after 10-15 minutes I would get the blue screen (forgot what the actual error message was). I have been using a relative's (who is out of the country) computer and have kind of just put this whole thing off. This morning I was able to access my Outlook address book to get a friend's number off my computer. But when I went back in after rebooting, it appears I cannot access any programs. (Tried to open Outlook Exp. again and cannot). I'm guessing there is nothing I can do now. This thing has just made my computer inoperable. But I thought I would just throw this out there and try to get some suggestions, if any. Thanks |

Welcome to CTH eqtynt13,
Almost hesitant to respond here, as I can see you have posted this exact same request in quite a few different forum locations. We can surely check some info to see what all is there, but for us to move forward here you will need to return to all those other requests you started and inform them that you are receiving assistance. Just not good to duplicate effort this way. To keep them from interfering with the repairs, be sure to temporarily disable all antivirus/anti-spyware softwares while these steps are being completed. This can usually be done through right clicking the software's Taskbar icons, or accessing each software through Start - Programs. Download RSIT (random's system information tool) from here to your desktop, then click on the RSIT.exe to start the scan. If necessary allow it to locate or download a copy of HijackThis as needed. Once the scan completes a textbox will open - copy/paste those contents here for review please. The log can also be found at C:\rsit\log.txt. RSIT will also create a second log, info.txt, which will be minimized to your taskbar. Post that here as well please (it will also be stored at C:\rsit\info.txt). You can break logs into parts and use separate posts here when replying and posting the log files, if needed. |

Thanks Jintan
I did in fact post to multiple boards, unaware there was any connection. Sorry, I forgot exactly what I did. And thank you for the welcome and the reply. I am just trying to juggle work and fixing this thing, but I will try to download the program today and try to boot in safe mode. I guess I can try another system disk as well? Need to locate that. All these things are tough when a computer gets to this point.

Yes, most of us are tied in many different ways by the assistance work we do. I had your other request closed at one forum, so they would not waste efforts on it, but if you get reply notifications of any others be sure to locate them again and inform the folks. Post the logs when ready and we will review then. See if you cannot get that info before trying other options.

Malware loading into the Winlogon process there, and a very good candidate for the problems you have been having. Not really sure what the purpose of this is just yet:
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Randy Lewis] C:\Documents and Settings\Randy Lewis\Randy Lewis.exe /i If you do not recognize that file, Make a copy of the following list, then close Internet Explorer and all running programs and run a scan in HijackThis. Place a check next to all of the following lines, then select “Fix Checked” and close HijackThis. O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Randy Lewis] C:\Documents and Settings\Randy Lewis\Randy Lewis.exe /i --------------- To keep them from interfering with the repairs, be sure to temporarily disable all antivirus/anti-spyware softwares while these steps are being completed. This can usually be done through right clicking the software's Taskbar icons, or accessing each software through Start - Programs. Download ComboFix.exe from here to your desktop, but I would like you to rename the file as you download it (do not download it directly without renaming it - use right click "Save Target/Link As" ). For this, rename the downloading file to combi.com, then click the renamed combi.com to run that scan. Be sure to install the Recovery Console if you are asked to do so. When the scan completes, a text window with your log will open. Please copy and paste that log back here. A caution - do not touch your mouse/keyboard until the scan has completed. The scan will temporarily disable your desktop, and if interrupted may leave your desktop disabled. If this occurs, please reboot to restore the desktop. Allow the scan to run. When completed a text window will appear - please copy/paste the contents back here. This log can also be found at C:\ComboFix.txt. |

Hi Jintan, thanks for taking a look. If you look at my original post, that file is in fact the malware (I realize you didn't know my name and now you do! LOL). Deleting it or fixing it will not do any good as it will be back in minutes. Tried numerous times already. Spybot and Adware are not able to fix it. I was hoping someone had knowledge of this virus and had a special fix. Years ago, I got smitfraud and downloaded a special removal tool for it. I was hoping for the same situation.
The good news is that I was able to browse and download at all! So I guess saying my computer is "completely inoperable" is an exaggeration now. But for all intents and purposes it is unusable IMO, as the blue screen can show any time and it is running extremely slow. |

The logs show you have the old and not longer supported Ewido there, which in itself can cause conflicts. And a pile of other undesirable softwares to uninstall, but first I suggest you do the steps as posted and let's make repairs there.

Hi Jintan, I ran the file as suggested and deleted Randy Lewis.exe. My computer is still not working well however. Super slow and crashing. It takes hours just to perform a simple task. I ran an older version of HJT because the RSIT was not working properly.

Wondered where you had gotten to. ComboFix removed quite a bit, but for some reason did not address an alternate data stream it would normally correct.
To keep them from interfering with the repairs, be sure to temporarily disable all antivirus/anti-spyware softwares while these steps are being completed. This can usually be done through right clicking the software's Taskbar icons, or accessing each software through Start - Programs. Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here. Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application. * Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish. * If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version. * Once the program has loaded, select "Perform quick scan", then click Scan. * The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient. * When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results. * Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. * When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. * The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM. * Copy and Paste the entire report in your next reply. If it calls for a reboot to complete the repairs do that as well then. Then run a new ComboFix scan, and post that and the Malwarebytes log please. |
