Screen resolution problem
While installing further menory I inadvertently partially dislodged the IDE HD connector at motherboard level with consequent inability to boot. Checked and ensured that connector was correctly in place. On booting the machine found and installed some or other items and then proceeded to load OS at 640x480 resolution.
Sounds simple enough to remedy via Display-> Settings but not so. When in settings the window overflows the screen such that the Functional buttons to apply the alteration are not available, nor are the top function buttons. Any help on this one appreciated. Registry editing or suchlike? I am running 98SE on a 17" LCD screen. |

If it helps, you can move the window using only the keyboard as follows:
- Click somewhere in the target window to make sure any keypresses go there. - While holding down the [ALT] key, press the SPACEBAR. - Release the [ALT] key. - Press and release the [M] key (meaning Move). - Use the cursor keys on the keyboard to move the window (up, down, left, right) until you can see the required keys. - Press [Return] to release the window and return to 'normal' mode. - Select the required function key or button as you wanted to. This can be repeated to move the target window around when you need to. HTH. |

You may find that changing resolution settings won't take. Older Windows versions don't do well with recognizing the newer LCD monitors. If you have or can borrow an older CRT monitor, hook that up and bootup the system. Allow Windows to correctly load the graphics drivers for that. Then switch over to the newer monitor. Sorta reset things there.

What has happened is windows loaded a generic driver instead of the right one you had installed. |

Apologies for not sooner acknowledging your most helpful information.
The solution posed by Home4tea worked like a charm albeit that my machine put up considerable resistance but finally acceded to the request. Jintan's suggestion had been my second thought and definitely works as does Murf's advice. Once again many thanks to all Regards |
