Problem configuring wireless card in Ubuntu 8.04

I've been using Ubuntu 8.04 for a few years and had a good wireless connection until my hard drive died last week. Now I can't figure out how to re-configure my wireless card. When I go into the config manager it asks for my ssid, type of encryption (WEP), and a password. It does not ask for the WEP encryption key.

I went into a terminal window and typed lshw -C network. The results properly identified my wireless card with the Prism ISL3890 chipset.

Then I tried typing $ sudo iwconfig wmaster0 key s:my-hex-key but got an error message that says "unknown command s:my-hex-key" (I did use my correct 10 digit hex wep key).

I specifically bought this wireless card because it is Linux compatible and does not require NDISWRAPPER and it has been working very well with Ubuntu.

By the way, in config manager I tried entering my hex WEP key in the password box and rebooted but that didn't work.

Any help would be appreciated.

Ken

Can you post the output of "sudo iwconfig?"

Generally, the syntax for setting up wireless is:

Code:
sudo iwconfig wlan0 essid NETWORKNAME enc YOURHEXKEYHERE

It's fixed!!!!

I tried, one more time, entering the hex WEP encryption key as the the password in the Network Manger and rebooted. It worked. The last time I tried this I put a 0x in front of the WEP key and that didn't work.

Thanks for all the help.

I don't know. I'm not very good with the Linux commands, so that is a command I copied from somewhere. It didn't work so I tried some variations that also did not work.

At any rate, the wireless is working now and I'm a happy camper.

Check this link, it may have a link to the Linksys drivers you are looking for.

Sorry modmidget, that Linksys question post was a comment spammer bot post, so was removed.
