Question Enabling Java Applets in internet explorer

I am running IE 6 (i think - not sure how to check the version) and have had a problem with my broadband speed. I have tried to run speedtester - www.speedtester.bt.com - and it tells me that I have not got Java applets enabled. I have tried ie-tools-advanced but no java option. In control panel, it appears that everything is enabled. Can anyone help?

The FAQ link on that site explains as follows ...

----- start of quote -----
Q9. I am not able to see the message 'PERFORMANCE TESTER Your Details will be verified after clicking on GO button' at the top of my screen.
A9. Performance Tester uses Java Applet for running the speed test on your PC. So Java must be installed on your PC for the Performance Tester to work.

If the message'PERFORMANCE TESTER Your Details will be verified after clicking on GO button' does not appear and instead you see a grey/yellow box or blank space, you may not have a Java Runtime Environment installed or correctly configured on your PC.

You can get the latest version of Sun JRE, available for Windows, Linux, OS X, Solaris and other operating systems, here.

After installing JRE, open a new browser window and access http://www.speedtester.bt.com now. If you still face the same problem please visit this website: http://www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml to further troubleshoot.
----- end of quote -----

I hope that (a) explains and (b) helps.

Thanks for that Keith. I've already explored all of these avenues though. I have the very latest Java on the machine and everything looks fine, until I try to do this speed tester. I then get the yellow box stating that Java applets are not enabled. I've looked in the support section of Javas website but there is nothing there to explain a way round this particular problem. Puzzled!

Have you considered downloading an alternative browser?
I tried that site with Firefox and it seems to be OK.
Or there's Opera or Google Chrome and many others besides.
Adding another browser should not upset IE and you will find that some sites work better if you are not using IE (though most are fine).

As you are on Vista, you could simply upgrade IE. I suspect it would work fine then also.

Or you could try both: upgrade IE and try another browser anyway. It's all free and, from personal experience, harmless.

I upgraded IE - no change. I tried on Google Chrome but still didn't get anywhere. I decided to completely uninstall Java, which gave some problems also. Eventually did this and re-installed it - No change, so tried again and BINGO! works on Google Chrome (still not in IE though)
Thanks for your help Keith.
All the best.
Jon

I am glad you got a result, even if IE is still not cooperating. TTFN.
