Suddenly not recovering from sleep mode

For several years I have always used sleep mode when shutting down my PC and it would wake up on pressing the power on button with no issue.

About a week ago it responded to the power on button but the monitor never displayed anything save "no video signal". I forced powered the system off and after a "windows did not shut down normally" restarted the system and it was useable. However then problem is now firmly rooted and sleep mode does not recover to the state it was in before shutting down. I have tried a system restore to the last windows update point with no effect. I have checked the reliability monitor and it shows a decrease on 22/5/2012 from 9.46 to 8.68 with subsequent further decreases each time I force a power off. The only event recorded for 22/05/2012 is "iexplorere.exe stopped working" ( version 9.0.8112.16421). I have tried resetting IE values using microsoft online tool with no effect,. Can you advise where i should be looking??
Thanks

reliability chart attached

AnnMarie, I may have mislead you about the relevance of iexplore.exe - I see now from my reliability data that I had a similar failure in early May but this problem with recoving from sleep has only existed for around 5 or 6 days..I hope I have correctly attached the screenprint from my reliability monitor

MIke
Additiona information 13 June

If I close the PC down using standard power off (from screen or from power button) I am able to power on again using the power button.

If I put the PC to sleep using keyboard button or from start menu, the power on button does not re start the PC and I have to remove power plug and re-insert to allow the power button to function

I have tried restoring the bios by removing the battery on the motherboard on rebooting - no effect .

The PC also usd to recover from sleep if I switched on my PC (usb attached) or plugged in another usb device but that no longer works either.

I have also tried a few days ago sfc/ scannow with no errors detected.

About 10 days ago I needed to run system restore and booted the PC in safe mode to allow this to run. I now see that I am unable to get "Normal Startup" without "boot minimal" being ticked. If I untick "boot minimal" it automatically chooses "Selective Startup - is this correct ?

Your system may have a driver installed that is incompatible with Vista.

You could try running the Driver Verifier tool to make sure you havent installed any unsigned drivers. You can also check for older drivers that may need updating.

To do this, click the Start menu and type “verifier.exe” in the "Search Programs and Files" box. Verifier.exe will appear at the top of the Menu. Rightclick on it and choose "Run as Administrator".

Click on “Create standard settings” and then click Next. In the next window, click on “Automatically select unsigned drivers” and click Finish.
The results will show a list of the unsigned drivers on your system. If any appear, either update them or uninstall the software that installed them.

If the problem persists, check to see if your system is using drivers that are meant for an older version of Windows (e.g. Windows XP). Click on “Create standard settings” and then click Next and select “Automatically select drivers built for older versions of Windows” and click on Finish. The results will now show you all drivers that are intended for older versions of Windows. Once again, I suggest that you update them or uninstall the software that installed them.

Update

I ran verifier.exe and it found "staropen.exe" which was unsigned - should I just delete it ? The second pass with verifier.exe found "igdkmd32.sys" which I believe is an Intel Graphics accelerator product. I have used startup inspector to stop this product from loading but i still have my original problem.

If I use the sleep button/start menu sleep option then I cannot power on the PC without first removing the power cord for 10secs and upon reconnection the PC auto powers up but does not finish recovering.
I can also make the PC power up by removing the LAN connection and reconnecting but again it does not finish rebooting.

If I shut the PC down with power button or with start menu option the power on function works as it should do.

Is that staropen.exe or starburn.sys? Dont delete it, you must uninstall the software that installed the driver and in this case, it's probably StarBurn.

Regarding igdkmd32.sys, run Intel's update utility and see if there is an updated driver available. http://www.intel.com/p/en_US/support/detect/graphics

If you still have problems, Microsoft have issued multiple hotfixes for Vista Sleep issues so it might be worthwhile checking out them out here to see if any may apply to your situation.

It is staropen.sys and it has a date of 19/04/2011 against it - I have checked the installed programs in programs and features and nothing was installed on that date - it has no owner against in the drivers folder and I am therefore at a loss as to how I can remove it ? I ran the intel utility yesterday and it is an up to date driver

Thanks

It might help if I can see some logs of what is running on your computer. Go here and download DDS to your Desktop and doubleclick on DDS.scr to run it. When the scan has finished, two logs will open. Copy and paste both reports in this topic. The logs will be reasonably large so you may have to divide them into sections and make several posts to post them.

Ok I can see what the problem is and I have my doubts that the issue is related to an unsigned driver. Staropen.sys is not running at startup and I too have no way of knowing what software installed it aside from the fact that it will be CD/DVD burning software.

It's a hardware issue and probably bios related. See here
