CD player ejects itself, autorun does not work

I have a HP Pavillion with XP Media edition and it came with bundled software, so I have no XP CD.

Lately I have been having trouble with burning or playing cd's, they wont stay in place, they keep ejecting. It takes several tries to get it to work.

When I put a music cd in, I don't get any prompt asking me what I want to do, view, play, etc. But I am able to play it by going to My Computer/file open, then I can click on each file. If I click on "play", I get "this file doesn't have a program association for performing this action. Create an association in folder options"

Is there a way to get the window prompt back when I try to play cd's, or might I have a virus that did something to autoplay?
Any help would be appreciated.

Oh dear, this seems pretty confusing to me. I got as far as the first step , the first line said "default not set" then autorun (1).
Then I tried to go to step 5. got as far as "Hkey current user and opened the software +, and there I am lost. So many lines. I saw nothing that said "software windows current user/policies/explorer. Once I get to Hkey current user, what + is what I am looking for under? Not sure if I can do this or not! Sorry I don't know more..

No problem. Let's see if we can make it simpler.

Lets try this first:

1. Click the Start Button
2. click All Programs
3. Click Accessories
4. Right Click Command Prompt
5. Click Run as administrator
6. At the command prompt (you will see a flashing cursor) type the following:

net start shellhwdetection (hit the <enter> key)

Restart the computer

Ok if that didn't work

Just follow these instructions exactly as the XP registry is the heart of XP.

Start | Run then type

regedit (hit OK)

This is where you were before.

Now clicking on the + signs (may be little arrows) expands the menu to sub menues. So starting with:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE click the + sign next to it, then under that you will see SYSTEM click the + sign next to it, now you will see ControlSet001, click the + sign then find Services click + sign now find CDROM, now you are there.

In the right pane find AutoRun which should have its data set to "0"

On the right you will see 3 columns:

Name
Type
Data

now the "0" may be a series of numbers but at the end should be (0), if it is then you need to change it.

Right click on AutoRun and modify change the value to 1

Now get out of there, reboot
