MAC Problems
Hi Cybertech,
Not sure this is the right place to start this, but here goes ... We have a Mac OS X version 10.6.8 running Safari version 5.1.7 operating wirelessly with our router. We have a couple of problems that have appeared in the last few months. Firstly, we cannot delete icons off the desktop. We can 'right click' an icon, select 'move to trash' then a box appears with the comment 'type your password to allow Finder to make changes'. when password is typed the box disappears and you get the sound of the item being trashed, however, when you look in the trash basket the item is not there and is still on the desktop. This happens with all the icons on the desk top and we are unable to clean it up. Secondly, we are having trouble with Safari. It seems to be unable to find internet pages it was just looking at or return to pages it originated from. We have a windows laptop connected wirelessly to the same router and it experiences none of these problems with IE. It is possible to press the new tab button (multiple times on occasions) and Safari cannot even find the home page, Google. It tends to fix itself if you do a Mac restart, but doesn't last for long before playing up again. I hope I have explained myself well enough for you to understand our problems. Confused
Hi,
I received a reply to my posted topic yesterday that simply said 'Bump'. Not sure what that means. Am I in the wrong topic forum? Rackers |

Right forum Rackers.
There was merely a spam post which has been removed. A couple questions.... Have you run Software Update from the System Preferences recently? Yes 10.6.8 is the latest version of that OS, but there have been several security updates to 10.6.8 you should install if you already haven't. These may correct the issues you are experiencing. Second, Have you tried repairing disc permissions via Disc Utility (in the Utilities folder)? And lastly, if you boot into Safe Mode (hold the shift key while booting) do the problems persist? |

System Check
Hi Buzz,
Thanks for your response. Q1: I checked the Software updates and they are current. There were no outstanding updates as it had been done as recently as 10 July. Q2: I tried the 'Repairing Disc Permissions' option. Initially we did a check and there was an armful of items on the list. After running RDP it said that it had repaired a lot of the items listed, however another verify check showed that the list was pretty full and hadn't repaired many if any at all. Q3: I booted in Safe Mode and the problems we had persisted. I even tried running RDP in Safe Mode but it didn't seem to have any effect whatsoever. Over to you! Rackers |

Okay.. if Safe Mode didn't work there are bigger issues.
Run Verify Disc on the hard drive from Disk Utility. Does that present any unrepairable items? If so... boot from an OS DVD and repair disc (and it may be time to replace the HDD). |
