Unhappy video format

how can you change the video format if the editing software you are using will only let you save as their own type. i need to change the format so it will work when i try to put my videos on the internet

What is the video format that the program is leting you save as?
and what do you need the video format to be?

file type: roxio media production

when i go to save production as: the only type of file is
videowave productions(*.dmsm)


im not sure what format i need it to be right now.. i guess just whatever is the most commonly used for uploading onto a video hoasting site

Chances are you're going File->Save As. In video editing software packages, this will save the project you're working on (the files locations of the videos you're using, the cut points, plus any extra effects you've added), but not the actual video itself. For that, you will need to use an Export or Render option (may be called something different in the Roxio software, but it should be in the File menu). That should allow you to export and encode the video where and how you want. It should allow you to choose from avi, mpg, wmv and more, at a variety of compression levels; choose the one that is best suited to your task.
