Changing files back to unknown application

Certain files on my pc where I work used to be shown as unknown application but have since been changed to internet explorer. How do I change them back to unknown application?

If you open My Computer, go to Tools > Folder Options > File Types.

Then scroll down the list to the file types you are looking for, highlight and click Delete. Then next time you try to open them, you will be prompted to select a program to open them with.

WARNING - if you delete a necessary file for Windows operation, you could corrupt Windows. So make sure you are certain the file type you are dealing with is not essential to the Windows operating system.

We would need to know the exact error message you get when you try to delete and it fails.

Hi wilsonza1, welcome to CTH. This is the danger of hi-jacking an old thread with your problem. You are using Windows XP. The original question related to Windows 2000.

You need to be logged in to Windows XP with an account that has administrator rights in order to be able to change or delete file associations.
