Hi all... I use IE 8 and windows 7 on this computer.. When browsing any web page, there are words that are highlighted or maybe selected on their own.. if I move the mouse cursor over any high lighted word a small popup comes on with an advertisement, and it gets to be annoying. Sometimes it cuts off by itself and other times I have to click the little x in the ad to get rid of it. I have the popup blocker turned on in IE8 but it don't stop this. Anyone know of a solution? Thanks..for any help. |

Most pop-up blockers won't block all ads since it depends what particular method is used to display the ad at the server end - they have cunning ways of defeating most blocking tools. And the problem with a really effective blocker is that it will also block pop-ups that are essential to the end-user functionality of many websites (though you can specify which websites the blocker should ignore)
The mouse-over ads you're referring to are particularly difficult to stop, but I think you should give Firefox a try. it's built-in blocker is more effective than the IE one (I've found it to be, anyway). Quite apart from that, it's a safer browser because it does not use ActiveX technology as IE does, often an agent used to push malware on to your PC. I don't mean to be rude but can I ask why?
I've found Firefox and it's pop up stopper to be invaluable. I've also installed the add-on ABP (Ad Block Plus) which will eliminate any ads which I find annoying, and so indicate. In addition I have added Greasemonkey and found a few scripts, to display certain pages the way I want them as opposed to the way the web site believes I should see them, it is fairly easy to write a script to customise any site on the web using this tool. Could I suggest you at least trial it, and I'll buy you a beer if you do not find it superior to Internet Explorer.

Ok, I downloaded it (firefox) and tried it.. don't like it one bit. It has the same problem
as IE8 with highlighted words. Moving the mouse over a highlighted word causes a popup ad just like IE.. So I see no advantage in using firefox. Besides that the displayed pages are not full screen. Sooooo Thanks, but no thanks. I'll stick with IE8. |

OK I owe you a beer, like to come to my pub, we could make a session of it,
![]() Actually I'm wondering what site you experienced the problem with, happy to take a look here and see if firefox can be configured to eliminate the annoyance you are seeing. |

THANKS, but I don't drink any alcohol.. anyway this happens on almost all sites,
but here is an example: http://www.sevenforums.com/general-discussion/ Scrolling down the page, you will notice certain words are highlighted, if you mouse over any of them you get a popup ad. Scrolling on down the page the ad will sometimes disappear, sometimes not... very annoying but just ignore the highlighted words is a work around. |

Is this what you are referring to
![]() If so this is a function of the forum, that allows users to preview posts before deciding what topic to click on. It is not a popup in the sense of popup ads on a page. Other than this I see no popups. |

I have that stuff also if i have SCRIPTS ENABLED which is 1 reason why I almost always have them disabled.. (Unfortunetly some sites wont work right w/o them so i do enable them WHEN I HAVE TO))
See if it works for you Bennie.. Click INTERNET OPTIONS/SECURITY/CUSTOM and scroll down to "ACTIVE SCRIPTING" and change it to 'DISABLE'.. Now when you goto that site,NOT ONLY WILL IT LOAD FASTER,you wont get the ads either ![]() If you have any sites you goto THAT NEED SCRIPTS,you can put them in your TRUSTED ZONE. (So you dont have to keep enabling and disabling them as i do) Good luck

What you're looking for a solution to is called "IntelliTXT" developed by Vibrant Media.
A Google search (or the search engine of your choice) on how to block IntelliTXT popups will yield some resources. Some have had success in blocking them by editing the Hosts files to add the line: 127.0.0.1 images.intellitxt.com In XP, the Hosts file is usually found in the C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\ETC folder. If you decide to try that method, be sure to edit the Hosts file in Notepad, not Word or Wordpad and with Word Wrap turned off. |

A little more searching and I discovered that Vibrant Media offers a way to turn off their IntelliTXT.
You can find it on the "Disable" tab on this Vibrant Media page. I don't know if it works, though. |
