will only boot in safe mode
I have one old pc that runs on windows 98. I use it just to make transcripts for my site @ tvmegasite.net because the ATI software does not work on later versions of windows. When I got up today, it had restarted in safe mode.
I can't get it to boot up in any other mode. When I try, I get the blue screen of death and it starts over in safe mode again. The keyboard is not recognized either in dos or safe mode. It's also not recognizing the cd rom. I have norton system works installed on there, but the win doctor (the program that fixes the registry and other errors) doesn't seem to be working, and since it won't recognize the cd rom drives, I can't run it from there. I tried running scan disk, but it gave me the blue screen of death and started over again. I have a windows 98 boot disk, but it says that the files are not found. I have never used it before. The wireless adapter doesn't work very often on this pc, either, so I have no net access. I could probably drag it over to the modem if need be. Any other ideas for how I can fix this without having to take it to a professional? I have 5 other computers, but I don't know how to hook it up to another computer or anything.... Thanks, Suzanne |

Welcome to CTH slanoue,
You don't mention the mouse, so I assume it does work in Safe Mode? Just to be sure the keyboard and this other problem are not sorta separate issues, if you have one, try a different keyboard. Also right click My Computer - Properties - Device Manager tab. On that list locate and click on the keyboard listing, then click the Remove button to uninstall that device. Then reboot and see if Windows won't reload the keyboard drivers and recognize the keyboard then. For the problems accessing normal mode, a change like this, and only able to access Safe Mode suggests incompatible software of some kind. And recent installs or upgrades done there? |

Thanks... a friend of mine who works with computers said that it sounded like something with the video card, so I deleted that in device manager as he suggested. It didn't do anything at first, but after being off for a few days, and a few reboots, it eventually saw it as "new hardware" and added it, and that solved the problem. So I guess something got corrupted...now it's working fine.
