Boy, my last experience w/ Windows 2000 was my first laptop, probably purchased when the OS was just released; I really enjoyed that operating system, just worked out quite well for me and did what was needed at the time.

Currently running XP, VISTA & Ubuntu 8.04 - likely will obtain a Windows 7 computer next spring to replace our XP DT computer. Of course, your main problems w/ W2K is both software/hardware support, esp. if upgrades are being offered to you. The old OS is no longer supported & drivers are not being made for newer hardware, so your system may just not function properly?

If you do upgrade, certainly go to Windows 7 - a direct upgrade is only possible w/ a VISTA computer, so you likely will need to buy a new computer w/ Windows 7 - your old computer will just not be compatible w/ the needs of W7.

Not sure 'what' you do w/ your computer and 'how' dependent you may be on Windows software? But I loaded Ubuntu on my old IBM laptop (having adding a new hard drive & some extra RAM) and really enjoy the machine - and the software is free!

Not sure how much this helps, but you have some thinking to do and a number of different options exist - good luck!

You do not need to upgrade as long as your computer does everything you want it to at a speed you are satisfied with. Wait for your next computer to upgrade.
