Good Photo Downloader for Linux

Hi to all.
On my largest computer I now run Vista Home premium alongside Ubuntu. Ubuntu has been a revelation to me - I love it. But I find no really good photograph downloader. There is a thing called something like 'F Picture,' (not sure if that is the correct name, but something like that) but it refuses to recognise photos from my digital camera when I connect it.
I may never download photos to Ubunbtu at all since Windows offers so many good options but I am just curious about this.

It is probably only a setting that needs to be changed. but if you are happy with what you have. then why bother?

Hello Campo - I'm assuming that you are trying to just plug in the camera (USB connection?) and expect Ubuntu to recognize the 'new' hardware and then offer a download option - correct?

Well, I'm running Ubuntu (alone) 8.04 on an old IBM laptop and have been amazed at the number of hardware devices that the OS has recognized. You might want to check the camera's website and the Ubuntu forums to see if your particular model has been an issue and whether a driver would help?

However, if your camera has a 'removable' memory card (I have an old Sony w/ a memory stick - use a USB adapter & a newer Canon w/ a SD card), then you can simply plug the card into a USB port - it will be 'mounted' as a new device - from there you can easily transfer pics from the card onto the hard drive of your computer, then use one of the many programs offered by Ubuntu to manipulate the figures. This is my usual preference in handling digital photos whether on either Windows or Ubuntu.
