Have a wee problem; I click-on my notepad icon and it shows on the taskbar but NO notepad? I have been using xp since it has been in existence; never had this to happen nor anyone else that has. Thanks.

Right click on the shortcut you use to open notepad, left click on Properties.

In the window that opens, on the General tab, see what the location is of the notepad.exe file that shortcut points to. It's usually in C:\Windows\System32.

Then look in that folder to make sure there's a notepad.exe file. If not, there should be another notepad.exe in C:\Windows. Copy it to the System32 folder, then see if the shortcut will then open Notepad.

Keep in mind that there is some malware that messes with Notepad and if the above doesn't work, you might want to start a new thread in our Malware Removal forum.

It you have a Taskbar icon when you launch Notepad but cannot see Notepad on the main screen then perhaps Notepad is launching fine but is positioning itself off the screen.
Try a right-click on the Notepad icon once you've launched it, then left-click on the Move option. Watch where the mouse pointer goes; it will be a four-headed arrow. Don't use the mouse. Simple use the cursor keys (up/down/left/right) to bring the mouse pointer back to the middle of the screen. With luck, Notepad will come along with it. Press Escape on the keyboard to release Notepad.

Let's hope that will work for you.

Strange you say this because I loose the mouse if I go to the right of the screen and this is where I position my notepad. Do you think it has something to do with the display resolution?

It may be the system somehow got set to use dual monitors. Easy enough to check: Control Panel>Display>Settings tab, maybe the "Advanced" button (been a while since I've used XP).

You're welcome....and thanks to home4tea for pointing out it may be a problem with placement or I'd never have thought of the dual monitor setting!
